Can you tell me more about the acidic/alkaline theory of health?!

Question:

Can you tell me more about the acidic/alkaline theory of health?

-container">I know almost nothing about it, but I have a friend (who I don't see too much anymore) who thinks it's great. She mentioned adding baking soda to bath water and drinking water to alkalize you. I don't know too much about this theory, but I've grown to love baking soda. It's great for cleaning, great for brushing my teeth...

So, what is the theory, does anyone have personal experience with it (working or not), how can I "alkalize" myself, what are good resources (books or websites) to find out more, etc., etc.

Answers:

Yeah i know a bit about it.

Its just one indicator of an optimal healthy state within the body.

most of the body has levels of acid/alkaline but its in the blood and the digestive tract where it matters the most.

the digestive system functions incredbily better in an alkaline state, nutrient production and recycling is much easier for the body under alkaline conditions.

Within the blood the level is almost even, but slightly alkaline.

I drink barley grass. mainly to offset anything else i might happen to drink (coffee aclohol etc etc) its like wheat grass but a bit easier to keep and manage, being a dry ground powder of young barley plants.

we have articles on our site about both ph balancing and various green super foods that are good for alkalizing:

the problems you can see with too much acid in your system are things like bacterial infections, exczema and skin rashes, toxin build up in joints leading to arthritis... etc etc theres many.

also balance is important, being too alkaline can be just as bad and not all foods that are alkaline or acidic have the same affect on the body.

some berries are a good example, they are acidic fruit that has an alkalizing response within the body.

most greens are pretty straight forward alkalizing though, the darker the more alkaline, getting a mix of light and dark greens is great for you.
