Ok Scooch, you're right, here's a little more information as suggested.
The question is from an assignment given to me by my Tutor. I am studying Level 3 Swedish Massage at college, (evenings). The question relates to a treatment room, (business), and questioning if this treatment room meets predetermined industry requirements and code of ethics boundaries. What do they mean by legislative, ie is this Health and Safety Act. What do they mean by Code of Ethics, what are they?
Many thanks again.

Many thanks again. Maybe a little more background as to where the question came from and/or who is asking this question. Is it from a legislative level that is questioning the inclusion of massage within the state's healthcare system? Is it a general ethics question left open for discussion? Is it a business or hospital wanting to set up a treatment room for massage, and questioning if this treatment room meets predetermined industry requirements or code of ethics boundaries? Or is it a question about Swedish Massage as an area of treatment? More info is needed on this one.

O.k. If this is a question coming from an educational source then it is designed to probably leave things a little open-ended to force you to research the idea a little more. They give vague professional parameters to challenge you. Legislative just refers to any municipal, county, state and/or federal codes, laws, rules and regulations that have been determined by any of the regulatory agencies that regulate the profession in your particular area. If you have a state licensing process, then a good place to start is with that agency. Code of ethics refers to an agreed code or standard of practice that helps signify your professionalism. When referring to this specific room, you will probably need to determine such factors as privacy & safety of the client/patient. Code of ethics examples can be found at the NCBTMB http://www.ncbtmb.com website and AMTA http://www.amtamassage.org website to help you get a grasp on that idea. The treatment room should meet all building codes for the legislation part, as for the ethics part, you need a separate area for undressing or dressing if you do not leave the room. The comfort and safety of your patients is of the utmost concern. The ethics are designed to make your patients feel more comfortable and safe in your treatment rooms. Other folks must not be able to see your patient's naked parts. Here is the code of ethics from the AMTA website. Your school should be teaching you about the code of ethics both for your benifit and your clients. :) It's all common sense but it's nice to have something to fall back on if needed.

You can also go to the NCBMT website and find the code of ethics there.

Oh, and a great book and worth the $$ is "The Educated Heart". I think I only paid 15 for it, not bad. It gives great examples of different situations and how to handle them...

I graduated from a great school last year and ethics was a LARGE part of our training. I'm concerned that you didn't know what it was.

Code of Ethics

This Code of Ethics is a summary statement of the standards by which massage therapists agree to conduct their practices and is a declaration of the general principles of acceptable, ethical, professional behavior.

Massage therapists shall:

Demonstrate commitment to provide the highest quality massage therapy/bodywork to those who seek their professional service.

Acknowledge the inherent worth and individuality of each person by not discriminating or behaving in any prejudicial manner with clients and/or colleagues.

Demonstrate professional excellence through regular self-assessment of strengths, limitations, and effectiveness by continued education and training.

Acknowledge the confidential nature of the professional relationship with clients and respect each client's right to privacy.

Conduct all business and professional activities within their scope of practice, the law of the land, and project a professional image.

Refrain from engaging in any sexual conduct or sexual activities involving their clients.

Accept responsibility to do no harm to the physical, mental and emotional well-being of self, clients, and associates. Do you know which body Swedish massage belongs to?
you could contact the British Massage Therapy Council or the sports Massage association or The British Complementary Medicine Association (this is their site)
