Help, my husband is hypoglycemic, and has the flu and can't keep anything down.?!

Question:

Help, my husband is hypoglycemic, and has the flu and can't keep anything down.?

How can I keep his blood sugar from dropping too low? It's 9:00 pm on a Sunday night so calling the Dr. is out of the question. The ER here sucks so bad I won't send my worst enemy there. Any suggestions?

Answers: I go through this all of the time this is what I do
but he is going to have to keep a close eye on his sugar levels
sucking on hard candy
even just putting honey on his tongue as the sugar will adsorb through the lining in his mouth.
if he can not keep any thing down stay with clear fluids
now we normally stay away from the reg ones but when you are sick you need the sugary kind
ginger ale can calm the stomach
getting some fresh ginger and put a small slice of it in a cup and pour boiling water over it add honey to it and that should help settle his tummy

mint tea will help with the up set tummy again add sugar or honey

any of the herbal teas adding sugar to them

Popsicles
freezes

it is better to take things in small sips and do not go over board or it will keep coming up

according to the diabetic society of Canada they say when sick check blood sugars every two hours plus when you feel like they are out of whack
now if his sugars are going too high drink the sugar free kind and if they are going too low take the sugar kind

suck on ice chips

You need to watch for dehydration
very dry lips

Grand Mum's herb book Have him suck on hard candy, which will get sugar into the system via his mouth, rather than his stomach. Have him sip something like coke or 7-up, room temperature and flat preferable, and very small sips. Actually, the sip should barely be enough to say you have it in the mouth. If he's not able to hold that down, then you really will need to go to the ER, as he will dehydrate quickly and they can at least give him a shot to help overcome to worst of the vomiting or an IV to replace lost fluid. NIbbling on candied ginger can also help, as will ginger water. You can make ginger water using either dried ground ginger or candied ginger, even the real stuff if you have it. A teaspoon of it in 16 ounces of water, room temp, and sweetened to taste, sipped slowly, will often help a woggy belly stabilize. And if it comes to it, a spoonful of sugar or honey on the tongue will work as well. Mix water with a bit of sugar and a bit of salt. Just have him take little sips. Honey 2 tablespoons and a few slices of fresh ginger, hot water, in a cup or mug. Oh, and half a pinch of salt. I'd go with the ginger, too - Wild Oats carries Ginger candy that I keep on hand for just that purpose, but you can also go to the local pharmacy and get some Emetrol for nausea - it has mostly sucrose in it, and is safe enough you can take it for morning sickness in the first trimester of pregnancy.
As a last resort, you can always get some Dramamine for motion sickness, and give it to him with a small sip of water. Wait until it settles his stomach, then give him some ginger ale, and some broth if he can keep it down. Often something slightly salty will settle stomachs.
