Question:

What's the best supplement to reduce cholesterol?

as in one supp. not a dozen

Answers: If you're asking about herbal supplements, Turmeric is the one you want. I put my Mother on it, and with in 1 month, her cholesterol had dropped 40 points. She has been on it for 9 months or so now, and doesn't have to go back for a re-check for 1 year. Her overall cholesterol has dropped. LDL is well below the desired, HDL(good cholesterol) is increasing nicely as well. She has been taking bee pollin for the last 6 months or so too. I think that is definitely helping things along as far as increasing her HDL. Good Luck Possibly Soy Millk, approx. 3 glasses per day -contains approx. 25 to 50 ?? mg's OR grams ? of soy OR whatever ? -and it's supposed to lower ur cholesterol 27 percent in 3 or 3 to 6 wks!!; i plan to try it; you can research it on internet; google or yahoo search---soy milk or soy protein OR either cholesterol. also, Lecithin is supposed to be good to help us lower cholesterol; not sure amount to use YET;

I'M takin statin drugs (euh); & worrying lots about possible side effects; only been taking ZOCOR 3 OR 4 WEEKS; doing pretty good on it thus far I THINK!-------also, note: there is 'soy lecithin' and then there is regular lecithin I THINK, & i think i read that lecithin is manufactured in our Livers. And cholesterol is manufacturered in our Livers also, (both good & bad cholesterol, I think! note: I think statin drugs Cause our liver NOT to manufacturer Good Nor BAD cholesterol, but i'm not sure if that is correct! i think i also read on web that statin drugs cause us to lower bad cholesterol and also raises our good cholesterol ? ; I GOTTA DO more research; am somewhat confused! I think i typed in, under search, google or yahoo: statin drugs; side effects. (but i'm not sure exactly what all i typed in---but i read some very interesting material ref. to statin drugs and Cholesterol. -& i read some Forums, i think u call it and read lots of info. //i think i will come off statin drugs & drink the Soy Milk, since it's supposed to lower our cholesterol 27 percent in 3 to 6 wks! hope it works! also We can eat Tofu made from soy (beans? or soy protein?/i had friend-lady, who took lecithin when she lost 100 lbs---20 + yrs. ago. i believe she lost that amount in 1 yr's time. (unfortunately she gained all the weight Back, later, when she went to work in Bakery). plant sterol found in some cholesterol reducing margarine spreads or yogurt. It really works My blood tests show that the plant sterols really do work, even if you need to consume more margarine than you might, normally, so, balance it with sterol enriched yoghurt with fruit. See www.mercola.com on the darker side of soy. HDL cholesterol is good, LDL is bad. Try Google. I would not suggest any supplement but a therapy which can be applied and has shown great results for many. It is called Pranic Healing.
Distant healing is possible, no supplements/medicines required, no side effects, No physical contact between Healer and Subject.
Let me know if u wish to know more. I too am interested in that. Thanks for all answers. I just saw an episode of Oprah (about two weeks ago) where ten people were put in a camp and given 11 lbs. of raw food a day... it was stuff like, zucchini, apples, mangos, carrots, broccoli, tomatos, ear of corn, strawberries etc... it filled a huge basket... eleven pounds of raw food is A-LOT! These people were asked to eat these foods raw for 10 days to see if they would really lose weight...

The episode was funny because the people were going to the toilet all day long, and felt like they were eating all day long and at the end of the day they felt like they were running a marathon trying to finish eating what was let in the basket.

At the end of the 10 days, they had lost weight, but the thing that caught the scientist of guard was ALL of their cholesteral had been lowered by 25%!!!!!!! Thats astounding, their are expensive meds on the market that take a year to "possbily" get this effect and this was in ten days!

Not only that but these people tended to have different body types and different levels of cholesteral issues but all lost at least 25% of their bad cholesteral. There are many supplements that will reduce cholesterol, but will only temporary control it, not help eliminate it. I would not suggest taking cholesterol supplements (such as pills, medication or eating margarine with plant sterol, etc.) Perhaps, they may work for awhile, but will it really help you with your cholesterol problem, in the long run? That answer would be a resounding, NO.

I strongly advise you to cut back on eating foods that contains lots of cholesterol, such as red animal meats, eggs and processed foods, and baked goods (containing butter or margarine . .alittle plant oil like canola or olive oil is good for you, for it contains good fats, and hardly any of the bad fats). Instead of eating eggs, red meat, etc . .all the time, try substituting them with another food that is leaner and that contains substances that fight cholesterol, in a natural way. There are regular foods out there that do just that. Three of them, I know, which are omega-3 fatty acids from oily fish, like salmon, cholestero-fighting substances in oatmeal . .oatmeal helps reduce cholesterol, naturally, and eating foods with lots of fiber-content in it (but with low or no amounts of any bad fats, like saturated fat): such righ-fiber foods are: broccoli, red kidney beans (also rich in protein), fiber cereals (Fiber-One, has 14 grams of fiber in 1 serving!), whole wheat breads or tortillas. I highly suggest you start incorporating more fiber-riched food in your diet, which will include many fruits, vegetables, and whole wheat breads. Why fiber? I have read and researched on the internet (and has proved to me to be true, by living to eat a fiber-riched diet, myself in my life; I don't have any health problems . .the fiber diet helps eliminate any bad cholesterol AND toxins build-up in my body . .making my body feel and look healther/strong) that fiber is another natural substance, besides omega-3 fatty acids in oily fish, that actually fight against bad cholesterol in the human body.
This is what happens: The tough fiber strands you consume in fiber-riched plant foods/cereals/breads, will cling to the bad cholesterol in your body (there is also good cholesterol), thus allowing the good cholesterol to function better. Too much bad cholesterol being collected in your arteries will block the flow of your blood . .which helps transport all important nurients thruout your stysem, one of them being the good cholesterol, thus preventing your body from functioning properly. Fiber will thus, cling to the bad cholesterol, and the toxins (bad substances, such as caffeine, sugar . . built up in your body, that your body can not use, but was consumed by you), thus helping your body eliminate the bad stuff in you, thru your waste, safely and efficiently.
(But, when starting out eating fiber-riched foods, make sure you start out slowly in amount and drink alots of water with it an hour before or after you eat (as well as thru-out the day) ..or else you will feel stomach pain and be gasy, and or/ your butt will feel sore . . by rectal problems . .such as rectal bleeding.)
There is a natrual and safe way to eliminate the bad cholesterol in your body, by eating these foods in its most natural state: oatmeal, fiber-riched foods like red kidney beans, peas, fresh broccoli, oranges, oily fish like salmon, fiber-cereals like Rasian Bran and Fiber-One, or whole wheat breads/pitas/tortillas, or if you want . .take a fiber pill supplement, with your meals. When eating fiber, always drink plenty of water, which will easily help the bulky fiber flow better and quickly, thru your digestive system. Eating a rich-fiber diet, will not only make you feel and look better (healthier), but such a diet will curb you eating too much junk (fatty) foods, and maintain your weight, naturally. If incoporating excersise, with this diet, this will help you lose weight, with faster results, but in a natural way. (not using diet fads, or skakes, or pills,etc)

Hope this helps!! Good luck and take good care of yourself. My husband suffers from high cholesterol and is currently taking statins....but even his doctor wants him off of these. I went to the health food store to seek guidance in supplements and was told about Red Yeast. It is in a capsule. I make him a smoothie in the morning and hide the contents of the capsule in the drink. He has been on this for about 6 months now and the doctor was impressed with his drop in numbers. I have also cut back his red meats. I have been allowing him to eat red meat once a week (He is unaware of all of this and just goes with the flow!). During the week, we eat lots of veggies...especially salads. When I bake anything, I use Stevia as a sweetner instead of sugar and add a small amount of the "sludge" that is left over from juicing. He loves Italian cooking, so I hide things in the sauces (juiced or creamed veggies). I only buy him 2% milk. We treat meat as a condiment and not the main course. I laugh when his doctor tells him to cut back on meat and he says that he can't do it. He has been doing this for months now and doesn't know it. If I tell him, he will think about it and miss the meat...so what he doesn't know won't hurt him in this case. By the way, check with your doctor before taking supplements since they can interact with your medications. I checked before giving the red yeast. I also buy the specialty margarines....which is used for toast. When I cook, I do not use olive oil since cooking with it hydrogenates it. I use pure coconut oil for sauteing. The same goes with nuts. I only buy low salt or no salt UNroasted nuts. If they are roasted, the oils become hydrogenated. Olive oil is great when it is not cooked though! So, don't stop using it. I question canola oil since it is not pure. We use a lot of curries that include tumeric, cumin, cinamon, etc...all great for lowering cholesterol. Actually, as a health care provider, I can say that there are many "remedies" that people claim to reduce cholesterol and they do not. The best way to lower cholesterol naturally is by your diet. Use less oils, red meats and high cholesterol containing products. Switch to high fiber, whole grain cereals or oatmeal. I know that Cheerios does work. I tried a 4 week challenge myself and was very impressed by the results. Choose chicken more frequently than high fatty meats. Also, just a change from Whole milk to 1% or better yet, skim is significant over time.
The best advice is to seek the advice of your Health Care Professional and see if they feel you cholesterol is high enough to seek medical intervention (example- medication or a herbal supplement). cholesterol is just a band-aid your body puts in place for the results of a bad diet. look at fixing your diet before going on lousey drugs! Evaluate your diet first. Decrease animal products and increase fruits & vegetables. Cholesterol come from animal products (meats & dairy) and your body making it. If there was one supplument to consider it would be fish oil. red rice yeast , works wonders for cholesterol
buy it in a natural health food store or online.
