What happens if you take over the recommended dosage of herbs such as Valerian root or Kava Kava extract?!

Question:

What happens if you take over the recommended dosage of herbs such as Valerian root or Kava Kava extract?

Is it possible to take too many vitamins? I don't mean a whole handful just more than the recommended dosage. Do ALL herbs have a recommended dosage, if so, is it always listed on the bottle? Is there an herb out there that promotes energy (not stimulants, only natural)? Please advise as I wear down in the afternoons and I don't want to take any "pep pills".

I know Valerian and Kava are not "pick me ups". It was just a general question. Thanks though because this is all new to me.

Too much of anything can kill you, whether it be natural or artificial... it's just the quantity that makes the difference. Even too much water or Oxygen can kill you, really.

You can take a huge variety of different supplements, but it's not good to take more than the recommended dose of any one of them. There's no listing on any supplement as far as what may happen if you take more than the recommended dose, and one good reason is that some people may "weigh the pros and cons" of the overdose. It's possible that taking too much of an herb could cause damage to any part of your body (liver, kidneys, heart, etc), or they might make you sick and puke all over... it's just better not to try it unless a doctor recommends more than the bottle's recommendations (since a doctor will know more of what you need than a general recommendation on a bottle).

As far as herbs that promote energy, there are quite a few of them. There's ATP (the source of cellular energy in the body), CoQ10 (which is used to produce ATP), L-Carnitine (an amino acid that converts fat into energy), Royal Jelly, B-vitamins, GABA, NADH (boosts brain transmitters dopamine and norepinephrine so it helps to fight fatigue), Ginseng, Eleuthero Root, and Guarana.

Boy, that's a lot when I write them all out. LOL! Those are the most popular items that our customers purchase for energy, so pretty much any of those should be a good boost of energy... however, different people respond differently to different supplements, so you might not get as much energy on some of the items as someone else, and you might get more energy than other people might from some items.

Oh, and yes, every supplement has a recommended dosage on it. Source(s):
I'm a Product Specialist for a vitamin company I have used standardized ginseng for an energy lift without the jitteriness of caffeine. make sure you buy standardized capsules. then you know you are getting the highest quality and the actual dose. there are dosage directions on the bottle.

Valerian is NOT a pick-me-up. It is narcotic, calming, and great for all cramps, taken in a tea form. kava Kava can relax you if you need that (like you are in a back spasm) or pick you up, but none of these are recommended long term; you need to give your body "breaks" abd take several weeks off, or just do them a few times a week.

Most important is to figure out WHY you are losing energy in the afternoons. do you eat a big lunch that is mostly carbs? Do you not eat enough and your blood sugar is dropping? (either of those could make you sleepy in the afternoon). Try a smaller lunch with a few small high energy "pick me up" snacks like a hard boiled egg, or eat more frequently if you don't eat for many hours. do certain foods make you sleepy? Keep a food diary and find out. You'd be surprised how much food allergies mess with your energy! Also, are you drinking enough water? You may be dehydrated. High doses of Kava put me right to sleep. Kind of like a over the counter PM. Leaves you feeling a little zoned out the next day.
