First of all, congratulations for getting the help you need. I also suffered post-partum depression. Unfortunately, that was 25 years ago when doctors just patted you on the back, called it "baby blues," and told you it would go away eventually. Well, it did go away . . . for awhile. The problem is I have a genetic predisposition to depressive disorder and that episode triggered it. I've had three major depressive episodes since, each one worse than the last. Had I been treated at the time of that first episode, I might not have had to go through the struggles of the past 20 years.

So, like the first poster says, take the meds and work with your doctor to nip this in the bud!

Finally, the issue of antidepressants and suicidal thoughts is a complicated one. There are researchers who argue that the drug doesn't actually *cause* the thoughts, but that it lifts the haze of depression enough so that the person recognizes and may be more able to act on the thoughts. As with any troublesome side effects, let your doctor know what's going on -- there are lots of medications available now if Zoloft isn't the right one for you. I have several friends who did great on Zoloft, but my daughter (yeah, she inherited the genes too <sigh>) didn't do well on it at all - so now she's on something else that's working great for her :-)
I was on it for about 5 months. It helped tremendously and I did not have any side effects. My doctor withdrew me when he thought I was ready and I have been fine for 4 years without it. Don't be afraid to take it--you will feel so much better.
I haven't taken zoloft, but I do take lexapro, and all of those anti-depressents say the same thing, they have to put those warnings on there to protect themselves. You shouldn't have any problems, just give the meds a try, you'll be fine. The most you'll get is nausea or being sleepy. Finding the right anti-depressent can be a long process because they all effect you differently, so if zoloft does have some side effects that you think are too much to handle, just tell your dr. and he/she will try another one. Good luck!
I've taken about everything but. Don't worry - it's always the same, you probably wont have any side effects.
I have taken it for 4 years and have never experienced any side effects. Zoloft saved my life. I hope it works for you. I take 100mg per day.
