there aren't a lot of ways to help if it's chronic. make sure he drinks a lot of water (at least 8 cups a day). be careful that he doesn't drink too much, as it can be dangerous. if he drinks 8 cups plus whatever to quench his thirst, that's probably good. this will help keep it soft and hopefully he won't feel as much pain. could he take over the counter laxatives? if it's safe, just using it when he really needs it might help keep things moving!
yogurt and other dairy might be good- if he's lactose intolerant, yogurt is still ok

other things that might help- fiber (best if it comes with a healthy diet and less from supplements)
prunes (are very high in fiber) if he doesn't like whole prunes, he could have prune juice (even watered down)

exercise, just make sure he is ok to exercise and will not get hurt; swimming might be good

what not to have excessive amounts of:
rice
ripe bananas (unripe ones may help!)

do you know what causes the constipation?
if it's medicine related, then there isn't a whole lot that will help :(
if it's natural, then diet will help a little bit

there are many foods out there on websites that claim to have laxative powers
really- most of them don't- it's only when taken in huge amounts, like boiling 100 pounds down to a liquid!!

a warm pack on the spot where it's tender may ease the muscles and provide some pain relief

good luck!
Not intending to be a smart@$$ -- I really did this and learned the hard way never to do it again. I was really thirsty and drank almost 64 ounces of apple juice in a 15 minute period. THAT'LL cure almost ANY constipation!
There is a tea called "get regular". It is an herbal laxative. It is sold at most regular grocery stores in their "natural" department. You can try that with a little honey (to sweeten). Just read the directions and make sure you steep it long enough!
Your health food store would have tons of remedies and instructions for using them. I prefer Colon Cleanse capsules. Other people prefer Aloe. I would suggest shopping with him in mind and see what is likely going to help him the most. It is very common to become more likely to get constipated as you get older. You're very likely right about the left-side tenderness. But if your granddad ever has blood or mucus in his stool, it is time to see a doctor.

There is a new yogurt on the market called Activia and it contains bifidus regularis. This yogurt tastes really good and comes in several different flavors and even comes with a money back guarantee if you have not seen results within two weeks of faithfully taking this product. If is he not lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy or fruits I would give it a try.
get some benefiber, its clear and can be put in or on anything
Rhubarb
First, think about what makes your situation unique and then consider what modifications may be necessary for the advice given and always consult your doctor! For instance, in my case, the constipation is due to many medications; therefore, I have had to increase the amounts of curatives to a higher degree than the answers listed in your forum. Start small and build slowly! My doctor loves what I
