I've tried a non-herbal method that works for me most times when I can't sleep.

First is to grab a glass of milk or water (not juice or tea) and take it with me to bed. I like to wrap up in my favourite comforter and arrange myself comfortably with a book and just read until I fall asleep.

What really helps is if you can hear a relaxing sound like falling rain, or light ocean sounds in the background.

Here's a website where you can download that/those kind of sound(s) if mother nature is not willing to accommodate you.

Works really well for me!

L-tryptophan helps

Take a long hot soak and read a book, not a magazine with advertisements, a book.

Put a few drops of calming essential oils in the bath such as jasmine, lavender, amarys.

Turn off most of the lights and relax.

While still all lazy from the warm water, snuggle right into bed.

Works for me.

I would suggest looking for a diet and/or lifestyle cause and solving that as well as using a treatment to fix the symptom.

Cutting down on caffiene and sugar from things like coffee and soda can go a long way to helping.

Sunshine is also helpfull. I would also recommend getting some excerise, i find getting some each day is benefical for many health related issues, not just helping to tire me out and burn of excess energy.

Once i get home and start winding down from a day, i find its good to drink some herbal tea, like peppermint, chamomile, nettle, anything really, most herbal tea is very alkaline and doesnt have caffeine like green and black tea.

Good Luck : )

They are usually very mild. The most commonly used is probably "chamomile tea."
My favorite herbal teas are at http://www.yogitea.com/#/ProductInfo/
Their tea called "Bedtime" is quite calming and tastes good, too. You can get a little box called Rest and Relax Sampler and see which of their four "Mind teas" works best for you.

bach flowers remedy for insomnia helps.u can also try putting some apples in a bowl of water by your bedside. the aroma from the apples helps to soothe. else can try taking melatonin, it is not a herb but is a chemical that our body generates makes us feel tired and sleepy. normally 3mg would put me into deep sleep within 10min. a slow jog or slow climbing of the stairs is said to have the same effect
