A question about American Indian's and herbs?!

Question: I have a question about the herb the American Indian's used when they did there "Vision Quest's" where they had to go out and seek a vision, I am trying to do research on it, and I am coming up dead ended, The only thing I know for sure that they used was a herb called "Peyote", but have no idea what it looked like or if it is even still around and growing today, I assum it was a hulecinegent, that they found out in the dessert, or even wild mushrooms, but besides wild mushrooms, what else did they use, and can you find it growing still today, or is it extinct or banned by the government?

Peyote is a cactus. It still grows today, but is hard to find. And it's banned by the us government ("freedom" hunh?)

It has a very powerful alkaloid that puts you in a near death state and you have hallucinations. They would also usually do peyote with heating their bodies in a sweat lodge. To enhance the effect.

It's rather hard on your body, if you wanted to try a hallucinogen it would probably be safer to do mushrooms.

Here is a link for more info:

I think Peyote is only a southwest thing, look it up on Wikipedia.

Are you thinking of sage? That is burned, not used as a drug. Sage is use for sacred stuff, I wouldn't be surprised if it was used during vision quest.

Just a guess, but I think the only real hallucinogen would possibly be lack of eating and drinking during it...
