Questions about flouridated water and if its really safe?!

Question: Where we live, our water is not fluoridated so I had been buying fluoridated water for our toddler. My mother had read a book about these kinds of things that we're told are safe to put into our bodies and they really are NOT safe and fluoride was one of the things the book listed as actually being toxic. She said that's why fluoride toothpaste says NOT TO INGEST it. So I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on fluoridated water and if its safe to give our toddler. I don't want his teeth to weaken if he doesn't have it, but my mother said that she didn't have fluoridated water when she was a child and neither did my brother and I as kids and we both have excellent teeth. Just wondered what everyone here thought.

I think fluorination of the nations water has been about one of the worst things ever done in the country. The extent of the "badness" that has occured is to the point you almost assume it just cannot be true.
I've studied fluoride for about 4 years. At first I was extremely skeptical that it could be as bad as it was, but since then any doubts I had were erased, replaced with wondering "what bad things can fluoride not do."
I don't really think this is the place to list every single anti fluoride arguement, but I'll say I've managed to convert a lot of people on the issue.
I have an ebook copy of a book that sums the issue up pretty well (the fluoride deception), and if you want I can send it to you.
But since you asked for a few specific points, fluoride is the most damaging to children, both in bone formation, and because it acts like a neurotoxin. The most likely result of you feeding your child fluorinated water is that he will grow up with a reduced iq, but other things can happen as well depending on the concentrations used.
If you would like any more details I'd be happy to provide them, but the book might be a better compilation and I don't think you wanted a 4 page rant on the ills of fluoride. I've studied tons of the "hidden chemicals and health risks" in the environment, and I sincerely believe almost nothing causes as much damage as fluoride.

My aunt's friend gave her daughter floride drops from the doctor and she's like fine and no side effects. She had a drop a day check with the doctor do be sure.

Fluoride IS safe. It is also toxic.
As any toxicologist will tell you, it all depends on the DOSE.
This is true for ANY chemical, no matter the source.

The amount found in fluoridated water is known to be safe for all ages. The warning on fluoride toothpaste is because you are only supposed to use a small amount, so it has a higher concentration. It could, potentially, be harmful if a small child were to ingest it, either all at once or habitually. Again, it's all about the DOSE.

As Opus details, toxicity depends on dose. The amount in fluoridated water is safe.

Fluoridation in water is one of the best and most effective public health measures taken in the last hundred years. Dentists should hate it, because it cuts deeply into their business, but they don't, because they know it works.

There's a cottage industry among crackpots to disseminate anti-fluoridation information. It's a reliable marker of quackiness in an altmed provider. Even the maverick Linus Pauling issued statements in favour of fluoridation.
