Could an ear piercing cause problems with acupuncture points?!

Question: There are about 110 acupuncture pionts for the ear, so isnt there a risk with piercings besides the ear lobes like damaging these points or causing unwanted side effects?

If they are done in non traditional piercing spots they can. In another post on here, an observation was noted that people who had ear piercings in unusual spots overlapping with ear accupunture points tended to get infected a lot, and it seemed as though the body was pushing them out.

The ears are not a major major system, so if you mess something up there it will not kill you (whereas on the wrists this a bit more of a problem). Branches of accupunture exists that focus off of using one region of the body to influence the rest of the body. They do work, but are mostly taught since it's easier to learn a small area than the whole body.

Anyhow, I wrote this last night and my friend posted it on his server. It's still a rough draft (and I need to consult some doctors on a few points I made in it), but it's a response to the site/article on quackwatch that keeps on getting linked to, to discredit accupuncture.

Recent research shows acupuncture "points" are non-specific. Whatever benefits are derived from acupuncture are the same from needles along "meridians" and needles distributed randomly.

All that time and money spent learning meridian maps is wasted. It's a superstitious farce.

So, it doesn't matter. To save your earlobes, I suggest embedding acupuncture needles in your nose.

This is a very good question; their has not been much research done on piercings at acupuncture points.

A friend of mine was doing his thesis on piercings on acupuncture points during Oriental medical school, and interviewed hundreds of people. While not scientifically conclusive, the 'navel' piercings that were placed at 'forbidden points' did have an increased incident of psychological disorders.

Staples are now being used for addictive behaviors with great success. These staples are based on auricular acupuncture therapy therapy.

Simply google auricular acupuncture point chart, and you should find corresponding organs that are affected by certain points.

i hope you know that ear acupuncture is founded by a french doctor. it is not the traditional Chinese method.in his opinion it is a direct way to influence the brain. this method of Noger suggest that is can do harm but also do good depended on the place where you are pierced

The theoretical answer is yes. The practical answer is no. Millions of people have had their ears pierced, problems with it are purely anecdotal.
