There are some great answers from the others to try. My advice is that sleep problems often are linked with anxiety so anything which helps to reduce anxiety before bedtime will help.

Remember we can only create anxiety by negative introspection (worrying about the past) and negative forecasting (worrying about the future), so avoid talking about problems with people before bed. Whenever we talk about bad things, then we have to imagine the scene in our minds. Now, the problem is that the subconscious mind can't tell the difference between imagination and reality so it produces the same stress hormones as though an event were really happening. You can prove this to yourself by monitoring your pulse before, during and after imagining a traumatic event. Because of this effect, avoid watching gritty TV dramas before bed.

Positive things you can do to help your sleep are:

Concentrate on your breathing while lying in bed. Make sure that your outbreath lasts longer than your inbreath. This creates a physiological response that will automatically relax you. Yoga makes great use of breathing techniques.

Have a warm bath directly before going to bed - this will lower your blood pressure temporarily by dilating blood vessels close to the skin surface.

Drink plenty of water during the day (about 2 litres) but don't drink anything an hour before bed (most of us wake up because our bladder is full!!)

Only burn incense if you find an incense that relaxes you! The sense of smell is the sense that is most closely linked to memory, therefore, what smells good to one person may make another physically sick!

Avoid stimuli such as lively music before bed. When a person having an anxiety attack is admitted to hospital via A&E they are generally put in a dark room on their own and receive no attention for several hours (this may sound cruel but because of the lack of stimuli, the subconscious perceives that the threat that it was reacting to must be over.)

Finally, try thinking of all the things that have made you laugh recently. This leads the mind into a positive cycle of thought patterns and, therefore, reduces anxiety. Incidently if ever one of your friends is depressed try encouraging them to remember happy occasions, you could be saving their life!!

Valerian Root tea, Sleepy time tea, Kava Kava tea (capsules) limit your intake of coffee to just one cup a day just to get you started in the morning then no more, OR no coffee six to seven hours before bedtime, do a little more exercise than what you usually do but not before bedtime, just a few tips to start you off with you journey to more restful sleep. Oh and they sell books on sleep and how to get more (restful) you can even try the library.

Drink a glass of warm milk honey
tak a warm bath before going to sleep
Relax before going to bed and ind bd,
walk as much as you can and all this things will work
dont take any sort of pills, never take medicine without medical supervicion and even then

Listen to an MP3 player when you go to bed. Once your asleep it don't matter. Just load it up with only stuff that relaxes you. Try it instead of the drugs. I did & it works for me.
Otherwise you can get stronger stuff from the doctor. There are pills that work quick but have a short effect and others that don't work quick but keep you asleep all night.
Good luck.

to get to sleep concentrate on your breathing and nothing else. To stay asleep, sleeping in a room about 65 degrees is best with lots of covers, keep the animals out of the room if they wake you, if you have to get away from snoring sleep on the couch or another room or have the other person.

I use a two-fold approach. First, I spray my pillow and linen with a Chamomile & Lavender essential oil spray. Then I put in earplugs, which blocks out most sounds (it mutes my husband's snoring) but I can still hear my own rhythmic breathing. It is very soothing and helps me fall asleep and stay asleep. The lavender and chamomile both have a sleep-inducing effect. My company, God's Country Botanicals, makes a blend called Renew using pure, therapuetic-grade oils. It smells really lovely. My husband and sons love it, too!

Best way I found out is to take Melatonin and go to sleep at time you like and eventually your body will adjust. You have to be active too.
