Problems taking fish oil supplements?!

Question: I take a number of high quality supplements daily. I am frustrated because I know the importance of fish oil, but I can't seem to tolerate fish oil pills. I have tried several brands, including Carlson's which is supposed to be very pure and high quality. Whether I take them with a meal or on an empty stomach, I burp the fish oil flavor terribly. I only drink water and tea and am typically not a "burper" but for some reason the fish oil makes me burp and it is terribly unpleasant. I have tried chilling and even freezing the pills and that didn't help.

Does anyone have any experience with this and make recommendation? I'm stumped as to why I can't tolerate the fish oil. I have a strong stomach and have never had sensitivies to food or supplements in the past.

Thanks!

I'm surprised how much misinformation there is out there.... or at least how many people don't read the full question.

In regards to the first answer, that ONLY applies to liquids... you should NOT put any softgels or capsules in the fridge or freezer unless the bottle specifically says to.

Flax Oil is a good source of Omega 3, 6, and 9 EFAs.... but the Omega 3 is ALA, not EPA or DHA that are in fish oil. The EPA and DHA give the actual benefits of fish oil, and ALA doesn't do the exact same thing. They can be taken together with good effect if you'd like.

Now, to actually answer your question, take an Enteric-coated fish oil. It'll digest in your intestines instead of your stomach, so you won't have any fishy burps. They are a lot more expensive, but most people that can't stand the taste say it's worth it.
Once you find one, give a call to the company and ask if they use Molecular Distillation with their fish oil... that's the only safe way to remove any trace contaminants of any heavy metals, so they won't be contaminated.

The problem with fish oil supplements is they go rancid VERY quickly, so if the place you're buying them from doesn't keep them in the refrigerator, chances are they've gone bad. I don't know where you live, or I would recommend a place to try & find what you need. I would probably more likely recommend just eating fatty fish, orange roughy, wild salmon, etc to get the omega's. Much safer & not as likely that you will burp them later. Good Luck!

You could just insert a live fish in to your va-jay-jay...that would work

hi- I also experience this occassionally. Try taking them at the beginning of a meal- seems to help for me.

You can also switch to flaxseed oil capsules for your omega-3's... cheaper, I think, and same nutrition. Though I don't know what other benefits there are to fish oil that you'd be missing with the flaxseed!

I cannot tolerate them either nor can I eat fish. there is a great product called coromega, it is an orange flavored paste, tastes just like a 50/50 bar-absolutely no fishy taste, none at all. a bit pricey but worth it and you can find it for pretty cheap on amazon or ebay rather than the drug stores but they do sell it at albertsons market

they sell ones that say on the label "no fish burps". U can buy them at walgreens. The brand is called Nature's Made , I think.

Nordic Naturals is the highest quality fish oil because they have not only taken the mercury out, but there are other metals that manufacturers leave in, like aluminum etc...

Nordic Naturals tolerates no metals whatsoever, zip, Nada... and They are pharmaceutical grade, standardized, and you get what you pay for.

If you want a plant source of Omega 3, which we get enough of 6's and 9's... You can also get it from Flax Oil.

I drizzle the oil over my fresh steamed veggies and it tastes like butter.

FYI - What most people don't know is that Omega oils will not work very well unless it is in conjuction with your own natural DHA, which you produce from a food called phytosterols.

Phytosterols are supposed to come from leafy greens, yams, and cherries in a plentiful supply, however... We've all but farmed these nutrients right out.

Take a standardized phytosterol product with the Omega 3 and wallah, you produce your own DHEA (youth hormone) and your transferase enzymes in your small intestine convert them to the remaning 87 hormones as needed to metabolize lean muscle, increase bone and decrease overall body fat.

This is all about anti aging, right? Use pharmaceutical standardized phytosterols that work. I have a pdf file that talks about what your hormones do, what pathways they lead to, and how phytosterols play an important role in hormone support.

Fatty acids (omega oils) help phytosterols work better and phytosterols help fatty acids work better.

It is synergistic.
