What happens when you chew a 'non-chewable' vitamin?!

Question: Does it make the vitamin less effective?

Answers: Does it make the vitamin less effective?

Most vitamins and medications are not made chewable for one simple reason. The body absorbs different vitamins and drugs at different points along the gastrointestinal tract. Most vitamins have to be absorbed in the intestines (depending whether they are fat or water souluble), and therefore have a light coating on the pill that the stomach acid will break down just before it enters the intestines.

By chewing it, you simply mechanically broke down the tab, instead of letting your stomach do the job. You may risk losing a little of the potency of the vitamin (less than 15%) due to the acidity of the stomach, but other than that you shouldn't have any issues, and you should still get the benefits of the vitamin.

Hope this helps

Other than getting a nasty taste in your mouth I am thinking the vitamen goes to work and does its job sooner. Because when you chew it your body has stared the digestiion process in your mouth.

I don't think so.. "Chewable" means they taste good when you chew them. They're designed to be palatable..

so non-chewable will taste horrid.. but other t han that, I don't think it would hurt.

It will taste nasty and chalky and will probably coat your mouth. Just a possiblity though: If you do it consistantly it might damage your mouth or esophogas tissue, these are not as well protected as the tissue in your stomach where the vitamin is supposed to start comming apart. Also some vitamins may need the acidity of the stomach to get well absorbed and may not be in a suitable condition for it to work by the time they get to the stomach.

The main thing is it's bitter and rancid taste. The probability of gagging or throwing up is very good because the vitamin is not flavored to please your sense of taste or smell.

you get a real nasty chalky taste in your mouth and no it dont do anything to the vitamin it will just work faster because you broke it down
