I put tea tree oil and rub it between the palms of my hands and inhale to clear out my nose and my throat. That's it.

You can put a few drops in boiled water in a bowl over a cutting board and put a towell over your head for a breathing treatment with a box of cleenexe.

You can evaporate essential oils in a special burner that slowly heats it to disperse in the air.

Its certainly better than those artificial GLADE products that don't do a darned thing but fill your air ways with toxins.

put it in the oven

if you don't have an oil burner (something like this):

than you can put a few drops in a small pan of hot water over the hob. The heat will help the oil evaoparate & the water will distribute it.

Yeah, it's okay to read things in books, but here's the truth. Tea tree oil or the essential oil of the melaleucca tree is EXTREMELY flammable. Melaleucca trees literally explode when they are caught up in forest fires, as do eucalyptus trees (Ask anyone who lives in CA about this one...) You would be far better to a) Boil a kettle full of hot water and add drops of tea tree oil to a big bowl, put a towel over your head, and steam yourself. (I actually prefer cedar and eucalyptus for this method, however.) b) You could also put eucalyptus oil (which I again prefer) into a squirt bottle of water and splash yourself liberally with it in the shower or in a steam stall. This is a traditional use in both Europe and in spas in this country. Can't comment about New Zealand or Australia, b/c I haven't been there yet, but it stands to reason that b/c those are the countries of origin both for tea tree and eucalyptus essential oils that these would be standard uses there as well. You can also a) brush your teeth with and use eucalyptus and tea tree as a gargle, b) apply it/them directly to cuts and scrapes as an antiseptic, and c) drink one or two drops in a glass of water if you are experiencing "intestinal distress", shall we say? It's a really good idea to travel with it, as it's essentially a first aid kit in a little bottle. If you feel you absolutely MUST BURN tea tree oil, which I again do not recommend, better to put it in a lot of water in a potpourri burner and infuse the air with it that way, than to put a flame directly under it. To my way of thinking and looking, the risks of this are just way too high.
