I have never been to a chiropractor but would like to go. Any advise?!

Question: What should I ask them when I go in there if I want to experience any basic healing or body work there? Do they only take patients who have a problem or do they also take people for "maintenance" work.

Does insurance cover this? How much might a basic treatment cost? Any advise/information will be really helpful. Thanks guys.

I'm with Laura, don't listen to ignorance. Chiropractors have helped millions of people. Risks for Chiropractic care are less than for taking Ibuprophen and Tylenol (Liver damage and kidney failure are "side effects" which have a 1:10,000 occurrance. Strokes "attributed to manipulation" - not necessarily Chiropractic manipulation - has an occurrance of 1:4,000,000).

Quality Healthcare is difficult to find. Seek referral from friends and family AND check out the BBB, Chamber of Commerce and State Licensing associations for qualified practioners.

Many insurances cover some aspect of Chiropractic care. Check your insurance coverage.

DON"T DO IT!!!!!! My mother and many other people i know have had strokes from going to chiropractors... it is an unnecessary risk! don't do it!

I've been seeing a chiro for about four months now for "maintenance" type work. I really enjoy going, it seems to help when I have sinus issues and makes my back feel great. It definitely falls more into a wellness type category like massage in my opinion then a true "doctor" visit. I would recommend it if you can find one that you like and trust. My insurance does cover my visits up to a certain dollar amount each year. It's not a real large dollar number, but the visits are relatively cheap anyway. I do end up having to pay my co-payments.

To the person who is convinced the chiro has cause her friends and others she knows to have strokes, I'm not sure where you get your info, but I've never heard of such a thing.

Unfortunately, your going to get some really stupid answers on this Yahoo Forum from very uninformed people.

There is a way to look them up on line to find a good one in your area and to find out if they take your insurance.

Chiropractors are manatory for professional athletes and my friend pioneered chiropractics in pregnancy and childbirthing.

Insurance coverage is a good thing to have, because the costs, as with any doctor, add up.

In selecting a Chiropractor, I would certainly go by recommendations from friends who have been satisfied by the results. In my opinion, a Chiropractor should have a whole body approach. This includes nutrition and even fields outside of Chiropractor, such as massotherapy. They should have a thorough evaluation of new patience, which includes x-ray. If you are by any chance in the Wooster, Ohio area, email me and I will send a recommendation that my family uses.

DONT GO!!!!!!!!

Yes insurance covers chiropractic. I love it but the only thing I noticed is when you start going its like you have to stick with it, You feel so much better when they adjust you but it seems like you have to keep going back or those adjustments you havent gotten in a while will start hurting. But take into consideration I have whiplash and back problems from a rear end accident. I dont want you to think I am bashing them as I love them but it seems like I have to contiue to go or it will start to hurt....as a matter of fact I havent been in over a year and hadnt had any bad probs but I wish I did have insurance or I;d be there at least once every other week.

"Chiropractors are mandatory for professional athletes"

What a joke...

If you see a chiropractor, he will generally be either a "straight" or a "mixer". "Straights" are unrehabilitated crackpots with strange and untrue ideas about what causes disease. "Mixers" are opportunistic con artists who try to sell all kinds of procedures and devices having nothing at all to do with Chiropractic. With either type of chiropractor, you're likely to be mis-diagnosed.

Is you like the drama that comes with back-crunching, see an Osteopath. Osteopaths are much brighter and better educated than chiropractors, and generally don't believe the ridiculous dogma about "subluxations" taught to chiropractors.

If you DO insist on seeing a chiropractor, find one who is an NACM member. This is a small organization of chiropractors wishing to rid the profession of superstition and scam. For this reason, they are hated by other chiropractors like the Devil hates fire extinguishers. There are also a couple of good reform-minded chiropractors on Answers-Altmed who willingly admit the shortcomings of the chiropractic profession but are not NACM members (they should be...). Other ethical chiropractors can be found on the list at bottom. They may or may not be NACM members.

DavidR: I don't have a website. Incidentally, When are you going to become an ethic chiropractor
