it's easy - the doctor puts a cup under the ear and squeezes WARM LOW pressure water into the ear using a large syringe with a small hose at the end

It flushes out the excess wax and gunk that's accumulated.

It actually tickles but by 'eck your hearing is WAY better afterwards!

No needles involved!

No - it doesn't hurt.
In fact it feels very nice.

It's nothing to worry about and it will unblock his ears and help his hearing. The doctor basically fills a large syringe with water and uses the pressure of the water to clean out the ears.

# Welcome patient, check identity, seat in upright chair close to work surface with equipment. Check source of referral for syringing.
# Check patient's history of ear problems or treatments, along with previous use of softening agent. (Advised to use olive oil for 2-3 days prior to syringing).
# Examine patient - ensure wax is soft, no obvious sign of infection or abnormality. For examination, use the largest speculum on the auroscope that will comfortably fit into the ear. Gently pull the pinna upwards and backwards to straighten the canal.
# Explain procedure to patient and ask patient to inform the nurse of any discomfort. Demonstrate noise of syringe. Gain informed consent.
# Protect patient with towel
# Ask patient to support Noott's tank (or get assistance)
# Ensure water is warm
# Straighten ear canal, while controlling jet. Aim jet upwards and backwards towards the roof of the canal, rather than directly at the tympanic membrane.
# Check at intervals for pain and examine for effectiveness.
# After removal of wax, give a final check and offer patient a tissue.
# Discuss causes of wax build up, the natural cleaning process of ears and the importance of the patient not attempting to use cotton buds, matchsticks etc to clean their ears.

kieran is right...its easy and nothing to be concerned about. dont think needles when it says syringing..it just the name of the thing that shoots the water in the ear.
its not painful in the slightest.
best way i cud describe it is the feeling you get around your ears when you dive into a pool.

It's nothing to worry about it only takes about five mins. warm water is syringed into the ear & wax washes out and that's it. just tell him not to stand up immidietly afterwards as his balance may be affected for a few minutes

hi wendy, there is nothing to worry about, i had mine done, and you dont feel it, they just put a solution in youre ear

It is a trivial procedure involving squirting body temperature water into the external ear canal, either with a syringe or an electric pump. As far as I know there have been no reported fatalities!
