What helps sinus infections besides antibiotics?!

Question: I have one right now and once again I'm on the same antibiotic as always and I'm sure it won't go away with only one round of anitbiotics. What else helps?

If the infections are chronic, you might need to see a doctor. You could have an abnormality in your nose or sinuses that keeps them from draining right. Or, you might have a mold or dust problem where you live/sleep. Or you could have a lowered imune system.

Echinacea (herb) can help your immune system. A good multi-vitamin and eating right can't hurt either.

You also might try a 'neti-pot'. It's like a tea pot that you put warm salty water in and irrigate your sinuses. Many people swear by that (look it up on the web).

Also, when you blow your nose, don't hold one nostril closed--that causes germs to be sucked up into the other sinus cavity.

Nasal steroids prescribed by your doctor, steam, hot liquids, spicy liquids, Afrin (BUT NOT FOR MORE THAN THREE DAYS). If you take Afrin, it is amazing, but it will make your nose get used to it and after three days, it can make you dependent on it and your problem worse.

A really good treatment is those saline nasal things that you squirt up your nose and then it comes out the other nostril. Man do those clear you up! And they are generally safe. Ask your pharmacist about them.

Definitely try the saline washes suggested by the others. It's a very safe alternative to hopping yourself up on a bunch of drugs. Also, eat as many spicy foods as you can. Studies have shown that people who consistently eat spicy foods have fewer sinus infections than people who don't eat spicy foods. So, go get some cayenne pepper and go wild. But, keep some tissues nearby.

Moving to Florida helps.

Going to Hawaii, when it get's cold....Always helps me.

Speaking of spicy foods, don't forget... garlic and oregano oil are some pretty good natural antibiotics. Both are available in easy to take caps.

Drink lots of water. Flushing Sinus cavaties with saline solutions.

I have a history of sinus infections and started using a neti pot a few months ago. Using it once a day, my sinuses are clear and I have not had a sinus infection. It has also helped my allergies since it washes the allergens out of my nasal passages.
