What should I put in a hot/cold pack?!

Question: I'm actually making a hot one and a cold one. The hot one needs to be able to be microwaved numerous times with no effects. The cold one only needs to be frozen. I would prefer to use different stuff in each. What is best to use?

I've had hot packs that were microwavable and they were filled with plain white rice or rice and lavender blossoms. You could freeze those plain rice ones, too. Make sure they aren't filled too tightly so they will still flex when frozen.

If you are making gifts, I've seen "Boo-boo bunnies" that are for children's bruises, made from a white wash cloth. You just roll it up, bend it in half and put a colorful bow an inch from the bend. Sew a face and some pink felt ears on the bunny. It can be dampened and kept frozen to apply to bruises. I would assume you could do something similar for adults - maybe bottle an arnica tincture to go with it for bruises. Or use an extract of peppermint for sore muscles.

Wal-mart sells a bandana that is evaporative. It uses those gel bits that you put into your flower pot soil to retain moisture. You just wet it and squeeze out the excess. I don't think they can be frozen but they FEEL cold when wet.

I looked in half a dozen aromatherapy books and didn't find anything made to be reusable.
