You can become dependent upon melatonin -- but, it's long-term effects aren't well known.

Typically -- I take it for a couple of days or a week . . . and then I stop taking it -- I sometimes sleep poorly the first night -- but, after that -- I'm back to my "normal" sleep pattern -- thanks to my own endocrine system.

I found that you don't need a "regimen" with melatonin. But, beware: it can give you that "groggy" feeling in the morning. I much prefer valarian tea for a restful night of sleep.

excellent article about melatonin.

I took it for about 9 months after having encephalitis and it helped to regulate my sleep patterns.

Melatonin is a hormone your body secretes naturally when the pineal gland gets information of absence of light. Melatonin is thought to produce the circadian rhythms that get people on a normal sleeping pattern. There really isn't much evidence as to whether taking a melatonin orally will have much affect on your sleep. It depends on, also, if you have some sort of deficiency that keeps you from producing melatonin. If that is the case, than you probably need to continue taking it for a while, if it even has an effect on you at all.

You may want to try products like diphenhydramine 25 mg at bed time usually puts most people to sleep. Diphenhydramine is the generic for Benadryl, but you do not have to buy the brand name, just look at the active ingredients for diphenhydramine.

you just take it once and in 30 mins you will feel like going to bed

We use Melatonin in our home to help us ease into sleep,it works for us,we have not become dependent on it,we also use other methods such as Valerian tea and chamolie tea.I hope that this helps...Good Luck!!!
