Herbs for Menstrual Cramps?!

Question: I get really bad menstrual cramps, with heavy bleeding. Sometimes the pain is so bad I throw up.

Can anybody recommend some herbs that work for you? I am only personal experiences, not information you found in a book or website.

Thanks

I hear ya. I spent the first 8 years of my menstruating life in such pain. My doctor was useless, since nothing he prescribed worked, some of it actually made my pain worse, and made me so sick that I would be curled up in a ball crying for hours.

The only thing that has ever worked for me is Raspberry leaf tea. I recommend this herb to a lot of my clients for the same purpose, and they just love it.

Often, what causes menstrual cramping is when blood clots get caught at the cervical opening, causing the uterine muscles to spasm. Raspberry leaf helps to stimulate and tone the uterine muscles, so it is better equipped to push out these clots. It also helps to relax the spasms. yes, it is possible to stimulate and relax at the same time.

If this is a chronic problem for you, I would suggest taking a raspberry leaf infusion 2 x a day for 3 months. To make an infusion, mix together 1 tsp herb per cup of boiling water and let it steep for at least 1 hour, overnight is best. It is more convenient to make enough to last several days, and it can be stored in the fridge.

If you don't want to take this every day, or if you only have cramps now and then, start drinking the tea a few days before your period starts. Or, you can drink a strong infusion (2 tsp or more per cup of boiling water) as soon as you start feeling the pain. Drink as much as you need to. You can not overdose on this. 2 strong mugs full of this tea in 1 shot is the most I have ever needed to drink for my pain to go away, even pain so bad that I was vomiting as well.

It is also astringent, which will help reduce the heaviness of your blood flow.

I have tried other herbs, such as Wild Yam, Valerian, and Cramp Bark, but they did not work for me.

I am wondering, do you have any other menstrual problems? Has pain and heavy bleeding been the norm for you, or does it happen now and then, has this just started happening recently?

Chamomile tea works great!!!

to answer your question i assume you don't take any medication and don't have any other health problem.

First try tylenol if you haven't tried it yet. Or, have you tried taking antiinflammatory ? like advil or motrin? If it's not enough, there are stronger antiinflammatories (like naproxen) with prescription.

If you are only interested in natural products, calcium helps PMS and for pain (1000-1200 mg per day).

If it's a very heavy bleeding, i suggest you see your doctor..maybe some other problem is present and is manifesting itself by the excessive bleeding.

Black Cohosh. Birth control pills worked wonders for me though.

I've used scullcap to great effect w/ the cramping. Vitex and cramp bark have also helped me immensely as has cutting beef and full fat dairy out of my diet. I still do eat some eggs and poultry and fish, but I try to watch that fat consumption like a hawk b/c it makes my cramps so much worse. I eat tons of veggies, grains, fruits, soups, beans, seaweed, salads. I notice a MARKED improvement in just about all aspects of my life when I eat seaweeds. I eat very few sweets as I'm diabetic, but I do occasionally eat things like homemade apple crisp, etc. There is really nothing that I don't eat, I just tend to be careful w/ what I do eat. I also find black tea and chamomile tea to be immensely helpful w/ cramping. Vit B-6 helps some women, but it does NOTHING for me. Lots of lemon, ginger and Kyo-green have also helped me get rid of horrible cramps.

Calcium esp. calcium lactate worked wonders for me i took it the same way you would use tylenol.
Some homeopatics have helped but those you need a practitioner to reccomend those
And dandelion was good too.
Listen to your body and try new things, i get constipated at my period so i get more cramps. so when i dirink more water and eat apricots to make me more regular i get less cramping.
try to alkalize your body and reduce the acid that can cause problems, and pain.

Yup, raspberry leaf.

Its the only one that works for me.

Try this tips:-

Limit the taken of alcohol.

Avoid highly salted food.

Eat food with a low glycemic index such as whole grain, legume, vegetables and fruits.

Eat more calcium that can be found on dairy product, canned salmon or sardines.

Try evening primrose oil pills or in liquid form.

Exercise regularly..

That's all..
