The hardened yellow to brown colored lumpy masses are most definitely wax. If you have a lot of white powdery substance, that shows that you also have a yeast infection and need to either be taking acidophiles or eating yogurt. If you get quite a bit of the yellow to brown residue, it is alright to candle up to 2 more times in the same day. I have never candled more than twice in one sitting. You must always do the same amount in each ear to maintain balance. After that, I would wait at least a week before doing again, unless you feel the build-up is occurring again. This is up to you as no one knows your body better than you.

Actually, it is usually both. During the ear candling process, the wax becomes soft and malleable sometimes because of the heat. This causes the earwax to melt and stick to the surface of the candle. The surface of the candle is made specifically to keep the wax on it. However, there will always be some of both on the end of the candle. Ear candling is used to both clean out the ear canal and to cause a sense of calm over the person it is being performed on.

It's from the candle. Unless you took expert photos of your ear before and after, which obviously people can't do at home, you would not be able to tell yourself. What you can do however, is burn one of these candles on its own and see what it looks like afterwards, and compare it to one burned in your ear. You will be able to answer your own question then. This is how labs have tested the results, using a candle burned in a controlled environment as a control, comaped to one burned in an ear. The residues of both are identical.

Nothing but candle wax. Ear candles are a hoax.
