Persistant Back Pain, is there a Cure?!

Question: Persistant Back Pain, is there a Cure.?
My sister, 21 years of age, has had back pain since the age of 16, I am told the pain is persistant and interferes with her life, Further, the back pain is about mid way up the spine, and not long ago also the lower back {I am told this is not a problem anymore}..
I reccommended strengthening the back muscles at the gym, on the machines, which I am told has helped a bit, with the lower back pain..

My sister asks family members to step on her back, which she finds relieves the pain, as this is done 'clicking' sounds can be felt on the feet and sometimes heard.. The pain is said to be relieved after this..

I do not think it is entirely safe or wise to be stepping on the back, so I recommended she sleeps without a pillow, as I believe this may be the cause, the raised neck {since she sleeps with two pillows!}, which is causing mid back pain.. However this has reaped little benefit..

Her doctor, just prescribes pain-killers, which is not addressing the cause, but the symptoms..Health Question & Answer

I crack my own neck and lower back......hell, my knuckles too....it feels good.. But I know I'm not "adjusting" my spine or restoring "innate energy".. I also do suffer from occasional severe back pains, so I speak from personal experience as well..
Meds can help short-term with flare ups, but shouldn't be the only thing her doctor is doing.. Get another opinion..

I don't know why your sister has back pain.. Most peoples low back pain is muscular/ligamentous/tendinous......and usually a mix of all three.. Back pain is part of the human condition, as our backs and pelvises have not fully evolved to be walking upright.. Core muscle strength, the abdominals is key to treatment and prevention of most kinds of back pain

Get "The New Back Doctor" by Hamilton Hall MD.. It is written for the layperson, but he has excellent diagrams and he divides back pain into 4 basic patterns with details on self tests to find out which pattern you have.. He goes into great detail explaining the cause and treatment of each of the patterns.. He even has a chapter on chiropractors, and doesn't bash them (he's an orthopedic surgeon)Health Question & Answer

Depends on the cause, if known:

- a good chiropractor can help, but you need to find a good one who does gentle (low-force) adjustments.. Walking on the back by non-professionals is very bad, and exacerbates the pain overall since only the easy vertebrae move, making the harder areas even more torqued and painful..

- I have had good luck with lidocaine injections--they relax the muscles and last about a week, with cumulative value.. They don't hurt! She can work with a physical therapist to get other good exercises, and she should NOT be running or doing any heavy weights at all..

- Yoga would help tremendously, as would exercises in water--you need to get over the effects of gravity! Pilates would also help develop the core (abs, obliques and other torso muscle groups that can help the back)..

- If she is overweight at all, she should lose weight to average or average-thin weight.. ANY weight in the mid-section adds disproportionately to the back pain..

- She does need a pillow, but one like a Tempur-Pedic that has a "cradle" in the middle for the head.. I've had mine for 20 years, and I can really tell the difference when I'm traveling and don't have it.. No pillow is just as bad on the neck, which affects the whole back..Health Question & Answer

I recommend several things that have helped me with my bad back (FYI H..S.. football)..
1..) A good bed.. A lousy bed can actually have negative effects on your body..
2..) Posture, a back brace or corset type brace under the clothes can promote good posture.. Slouching or bad posture wither standing or sitting can hurt your back..
3..) Shoes, find good shoes that support the arches of the feet and body.. For women, I know that high heels and flat style shoes like sandals if worn too long cause pain in the feet and back..
4..) Exercise does help, but its not your back muscles you have to focus on.. A strong core of the abs stomach area can cure most peoples back pain.. A flatter stomach puts less weight on the back muscles..
5..) This one I know because of a ex-girlfriend.. A Bra that doesn't support a woman the right way.. Easy solution is find the right size and support according to my ex..

Chiropractic Spine Manipulation is just a temporary fix.. The effects wear off just like a massage would..

I hope your sister's back feels better..Health Question & Answer

IF the doctors have not diagnosed the cause by now most likely not in balance and causing pain..

The clicking sound may be she is in need of some supplements to help prevent clicking.? filtered wild fish oil comes to mind and vit C..

for the Pain and to help the muscling I would recommend if it were my sister Australian Bush Flower Essences Emergency Essence with Bottlebrush added..

I would check the back section of the book as they have several others that help specific parts of the back, though I would add Five Corners right off as being the number one remedy for lower back problems..

These are not drugs but energy medicines, they either work or they do nothing so you can not go to far wrong..

You seem to have a good grip on back pain from everything you have said.. It is 100% true that stronger back muscles can lessen back pain.. You see, strong back muscles generate more neurologic imulses when they are contracted than a weak muscle does.. These impulses naturally block pain! In the US we say in sports "walk it off" or "shake it off" if we get a mild injury.. The truth is even the movement of joints (bone articulations) can even block pain as well.. For your sister to have chronic back pain......it is simply an indication that he normal ability for her back joints and muscles to naturally block pain has been interferred with.. This is commonly due to injury, poor physicial fitness, repetitive use injuries, or even congenitial anomolies (born wierd)..
There is actually a surgery that can implant an electrical dvice under the skin with electrodes placed inside the joint......and a battery tricks the receptors to fire and thus block pain.. I'd much rather a person try increasing back stregth and get adjusted to improve this "firing" to feel good..
Unless her chronic pain and inflammation has created significant joint degeneration (arthritis), it is quite reasonable that she could benefit from "Proper" spinal manipulation at a trustworthy chiro.. If she cannot get her condition under controll, degeneration can be painfull initself that a life on meds is common for some..Health Question & Answer

She could possibly benefit from acupuncture, although that depends on the hidden cause for the pain..
My husband used to have chronic back pain from a childhood incident where he pinched a nerve and he used to ask me to step on his back too (which is a horrible experience if you are the one doing the stepping)..
He's in the military and it started getting so bad after a few years of service that it was affecting his ability to perform physical tasks and trainings and he was on the verge of medical discharge.. He started acupuncture treatments about 7 months ago and hasn't had any flare ups since and is now happily persuing marine officer training.. It could possibly be too early to tell if it "cured" the problem, but he's had 7 months pain free and didn't lose his job so thats a step in the right direction..Health Question & Answer

what about her Xray report.? if there is any deformity in spines, chiropractice can be useful.. try out some ayurvedic treatment with this..
i am sending some information about chiropractic-:
The spinal adjustment is what makes doctors of chiropractic unique in their approach to treating patients with spinal complaints.. The chiropractic adjustment, however, may not be the only procedure a chiropractor may employ in
managing a patient
