Opium is the drug extracted from the poppy.. Other plants also produce potent psychoactive drugs - all of which are highly addictive and illegal to possess.. There are plants which have medicinal benefit, but it takes a highly trained and very experienced team of technicians and pharmacists to extract the medicinal compounds from those plants.. Using the raw plant yourself is an extremely dangerous thing to do.. You could easily kill yourself.. You can buy herbal medicines in a variety of stores, but FDA and other agencies have found many of those packaged compounds are contaminated and that they often don't contain one bit of the plant listed on the label.. FDA has subsequently sought the legal authority to regulate "herbal" and "alternative" medicines, but a combination of ignorant consumers and monetary "contributions" to certain members of Congress by those who peddle these worthless nostrums has thus far prevented it.. FDA is not allowed to regulate "alternative" or "herbal" medicines.. Use 'em at your own risk - and if you inadvertently poison yourself, don't say you weren't warned..Health Question & Answer
