antihistamines, decongestants and aspirin as directed

Plenty of rest in a clean room with clean sheets, the windows open to get fresh air and lysol sprayed where there has been coughing, sneezing ot tissues.

For a sore throat rub Vicks or similar product around throat and chest, take a narrow long piece of flannel and wrap it snugly but not too snugly around your neck and go back to bed.

also for a sore throat, gargle with warm salt water.

Soaking in a hot bath or taking a hot shower or breathing over a bowl of hot water with a towel draped down over your head helps ease congestion. The bath also helps body aches.

Tea or hot toddy.

favorite breakfast when sick = Tea, small V8, and boiled egg OR yogurt with berries

favorite sick meal other than breakfast = Hot broth with crackers and fruit

Oh and I've never figured out why anyone would use cough syrup. All it does for me is make matters worse.

Health Question & Answer

The suggestions to take antihistamines, decongestants, and other cold remedy products are what I would have offered many years ago. It is what I did many years ago. And I caught every cold that came my way. And nursed it along to keep symptoms as controlled as I could. All these over the counter drugs do just that... control the symptoms.
In the last eight years, I've hardly had a cold. I catch cold bugs all the time, but I know how to kill them off before they take hold. I would have loved to have known all those years ago that there was more I could do than just manage symptoms.
The hot bath/shower...great! Germs are very sensitive to heat (which is why our bodies are geared to run fevers when we are sick...to kill the germs off).
The hot broth...make it chicken, very therapeutic. But even more therapeutic is to know how to kill off those germs...
My most recent introduction to dealing with viral infections is to take high doses of protease enzymes (in the form of chewable papaya tablets). Viruses are single cell organisms with a protein membrane. Protease enzymes digest protein, so they dissolve this membrane, and in doing so, kills the virus. The deal is that by the time you have cold symptoms, you have ga-zillions of these viruses in your system. A few viruses won't make you symptomatic, nor will a thousand...but when their numbers go up, your symptoms show up and worsen. Point is, you have to mega dose on protease enzymes. The good news is that in chewable form, the papaya enzyme is both relatively cheap and very easy to ingest. Just chew a handful at a time throughout the day. Works wonders.
Additionally, some supplements that boost immune response are:
Echinacea...available as capsules, tinctures, teas, and ready-made drinks. My favorite drink is lemon ginger echinacea by R.W.Knudsen. I stock up when they have it on sale, and keep a minimum of six bottles on hand. I will often make lemon ginger echinacea tea using an echinacea tea bag and a lemon ginger teabag. If I need to minimize my sugar intake, then I go for the homebrewed tea.
Olive leaf extract is another wonderful immune booster. Take as directed.
Extra vitamin C is helpful as well. As is zinc and l-lysine.
