Dong Quai....Tang Kuei supplement?!

Question: Dong Quai....Tang Kuei supplement.?
Hi, I recently got a bottle of an herbal supplement called Tang Kuei which is really Dong Quai, from what I understand.

My thought was it would help with some of the mood swings associated with pms, etc--I'm 46. It contains 200mg of the Dong Quai and 40 mg of calcium and 200 mg of Chamomile.

The dosage is 1 tab up to 3x daily.

My question is do I take this just during pms type symptoms or every day.?

Thanks for any insight!Health Question & Answer

Answers:
For proper dosages it is best to consult a competent Chinese herbalist that can tell you which formula would best meet your needs. It is recommended you take Dong Quai under the supervision of a qualified Chinese herbalist because it is difficult to self-prescribe Chinese herbal formulas.

However, my opinion would be to take it for no longer than 2 weeks at a time, with a week or 2 break. If you could set up your dosing times around your period, I believe it would be beneficial to you.

Hope this helps.

Please do NOT take Don Quai every day of the month, as it can stimulate VERY heavy menstrual bleeding.

Daily doses are fine over long periods of time, since the herb has greater effects the longer its used, as long as you discontinue its use one week before your period starts and resume after your period is finished.

This is an excellent female tonic herb, helping to strengthen and balance the uterus and nourish the blood. While it has no specific hormonal action, through its positive effect on the liver and endocrine system it exerts a regulating and normalizing influence on hormonal production. For this reason, you will still benefit from the herb's action even if you are not taking it right during PMS, since that tends to happen a few days to a week before most periods start.

Health Question & Answer

Absolutely! Dong Quai is one of the most popular herbs for hormonal health in women and there are millions of women world-wide that take it to help temper the hormonal fluctuations and help with PMS, bloating, and other "monthly issues". The added Chamomile is also really good for calming and relaxation, so that could help as well.
It is best when taken daily. If you only take it while you are having symptoms of PMS, it won't be anywhere near as effective... it's not like a drug where it will just shut it off, it will help your body to deal with it more gently and naturally (so there won't be any real side effects). There is another use for Angelica sinensis (the scientific name of the herb) that is based on recent publication. It stimulates the activation of the cholinergic pathway, used by the body to control the immune response. Inappropriate and excessive immune response is one thing that makes us feel sick and irritable. I have used it as an ingredient in my personal Chinese Herbal tea and find it helpful. (I am a 57 year old man.)
I believe that you may use it as you wish, based on your own response to it. Why not take it for a month and keep a record of how you feel.?Health Question & Answer

my understanding is to take it about 7-10 days before your period & the week of, then stop & take a break.
