Alternatives to amitrypline for migraines?!

Question: Alternatives to amitrypline for migraines.?
I've been suffering from the odd migraine for a few years now. I usually took advil migraine to deal with it. About 4 months ago I had a really bad spell of migraines. A 10 day stretch where they didn't go away. After numerous testing and eliminating possibilities, the doctor has put me on a 50mg dose of Amitrypline daily to help control them.

I've now had 2 severe headaches in the last 4 days. I'm not sure why. But instead of upping my dosage, I am hoping to go a more natural and healthy approach. Are there any alternatives I can take to this med.?.? Anything I can get from a health food store or a naturopath.?.?

Thanks for your help.Health Question & Answer

Migraines are terribly painful. I suffered with them for years. I am a certified aromatherapist and would recommend that you use this combination:1 drop of Essential Lavender oil and 1 drop of Peppermint to 1 Teaspoon of carrier oil. (Sweet almond oil or Grape seed oil etc.)

Massage this into the temples and back of neck. also soak your feet in a tub of cold water. The cold water helps to open up the blood vessels which are part of the reason for the migraine. Migraines come because the blood vessels are constricted.

For some strange reason taking some protein seems to help too. A Piece of cheddar cheese or a teaspoon of peanut butter seems to help ease the pain.

I know this has helped me and some of my clients. I hope it works well for you.

All the best

For treating symptoms:
Feverfew will help the pain, ginkgo biloba aids circulation and can reduce sensitivity to light and sound, peppermint will help with the nausea.

At the onset:
Take lecithin (between 3 and 6 1,200 mg capsules ) at the first sign of a migraine- it lessens both length and severity of the headache.
Inhale essential oil of lavender at the beginning of a migraine- this also can lessen pain and duration.

To prevent occurrences:
Avoid avocados, aged meats, chocolate, MSG, nitrites, canned fish, alcohol and dairy products. And many people find that regular Chiropractic adjustments help enormously.

I have heard that hormone creams can help. Get off that crap soon. That stuff is dangerous. You could try acupuncture also. I would go to health food store and speak with them or google it. I am sure there are tons of ideas on the internet. There has to be something less drastic than that drug for you. do some investigating. good luck.Health Question & Answer

stress, caffeine, chocolate who knows what brings them. unless you have them people do not understand the pain.

i can tell usually just before they hit, the back of one or both of my eyes hurt. pop the imitrex right away. sometimes it works w/one dose sometimes i need two.
