Ear candling for middle ear fluid?!

Question: Ear candling for middle ear fluid.?
I've tried almost everything to get rid of the fluid. The doctors only prescribe Sudafed Decongestants, or nasal sprays. I've tried cleaning out my ears with saline solutions and Hydrogen Peroxid, thinking it was build up ear wax. I've had this middle ear fluid for about 4 months. I have so much pressure in my jaw area and it's driving me nuts. Will ear candling help me out.?.?.?.Health Question & Answer

Several answers have already debunked the silly ear candling, so I won't. The point being, nothing you do in the external canal will make any difference, because the problem is on the other side of the ear drum.

Middle ear effusion (fluid trapped behind the drum) is a common complication of ear infections, colds and allergies. Fluid is normally produced there, but drains out through the Eustachian or auditory tube into the back of your throat. When the mucus membranes get inflamed from viruses or allergens....guess what, they swell up and produce mucus, and this sometimes results in the tube being plugged.

It can take several months to resolve, and is quite annoying, I know. Lot of fluids, decongestants, "popping" your ears usually takes care of it. ENT surgeons almost never get involved in these things by doing surgery, however they are the ones with the proper training and skills to drain the fluid if it does get to that point. If you've got pain and an infection...it may be to that point.Health Question & Answer

Ear candling or coning is a method of cleaning the ears and the mind, which allegedly alleviates a host of physical, emotional and spiritual ailments. A hollow candle is stuck into the ear and lit, allegedly sucking out earwax and negative energy. The process is ineffective for earwax removal. I don't know how anyone knows whether it sucks out energy, positive or negative.

What wax appears in the cone is from the melted candle, not from the ears. The suction created by the coning flame is insufficient to remove wax, which, by the way, is good for you. It traps dust and dirt and helps fight infections.

Though some people fear that coning will leave them mindless, the only real dangers are from burning, infection, obstruction of the ear canal and perforation of the eardrum.

The origin of this unnatural practice has been given as ancient Tibet, China, India, Egypt, and pre-Columbian America. Even Atlantis is cited as a possible origin. In other words, we don't have a clue how this thing got started.

We also have no idea how far this will go, but Butt Candling could be the end. Another candle in the dark blown out by an ill wind.?Health Question & Answer

Yikes! Be very careful messing with yourown home remedies. Is it at all possible that you could get to an Ear-Nose and throat doctor.? HE'S the one who can help you.....certainly not a family doctor!
I think it's even mandatory that you see a specialist for ears!! Look at this!!:

Ear candling, also called ear coning or thermal-auricular therapy, is an alternative medicine practice claimed to assist the natural clearing of earwax from a person's ear by lighting one end of a hollow candle and placing the other end in the ear canal. According to medical researchers, it is both dangerous and ineffective.Health Question & Answer

Ear candling will only remove the wax in the canal which ends at the tympanic membrane.

Ask your doc for a referral to an ENT surgeon to put a tube in your ear, that will drain the fluid and help relieve the infection. You'll get a whiff of nitrous, be asleep for a few minutes and wake up with a tube and a bit of cotton in your ear. The tube will eventually fall out on it's own.Health Question & Answer

My wife got herself a very bad ear infection after ear candling. Go back to the doctor, or get a new doctor. Mary's advice about an ENT specialist is good.Health Question & Answer
