Blood test result of RF factor for Rheumatoid arthritis?!

Question: Blood test result of RF factor for Rheumatoid arthritis.?
I spoke to my GP who said that the rheumatoid arthritis that was serum negative is now serum positive and the RF was now 38, this means it is higher than 30 and is positive. I do not know the maximum if there is one.

Question can anyone tell me the significance of this result.?

Can you tell me anything i should be doing to help myself.?

I cannot have any medication apart from half a paracetamol every four hours because of proven allergies so my GP's hands are tied.

Any advice welcome.

Answers:
First of all, this is a low level of being positive and you can be part of the population, approx 7% with RF positive without any disease.

The numbers go into the high hundreds with strong positivity.

The treatment would be to match the disease. From your information, it is difficult to say as it is unclear what the problem is.

There are some new topical treatments available, such as lidocaine and diclofenac gel that you can try for pain.Health Question & Answer

RF is an antibody that is measurable in the blood. Rheumatoid factor is an antibody that is not usually present in the normal individual. High levels RF (generally above 20 IU/mL) canindicate rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren's syndrome. The higher the levels of RF the higher the possibility of a more destructive articular disease.

Sometimes there can be a false positives results due to other causes, or when other autoimmune diseases may be present; chronic hepatitis, any chronic viral infection etc. There is no cure for Rheumatoid Arthritis, just management, steroid therapy that used to be used in the past tends to be used less now because of the risk/benefit ratio. I think DMARDs are generally used.
Things other than drug therapy are; Weight loss (if your overweight)and Physiotherapy are useful for some people, as well as anti-inflammatory drugs. Regular exercise is good too.Health Question & Answer
