After searching on Yahoo, it seems that Diatomaceous Earth is a naturally occurring mineral make-up that is from fossilized remains of hard-shelled algae. It's got a pretty good mineral complex listed for it (Calcium, Silica, Magnesium, etc), so if it was pure, it might be good for general health in proper doses... however, it looks like it's inordinately high in certain minerals, so the dose that would be safe for those would be almost pointless doses for most of the rest of the minerals it's made up of.
The other thing that makes me a bit nervous is that there aren't many listings for websites selling it for human consumption, but there are several that are selling it for pest control.Health Question & Answer
