Trapped on an island: natural hair advice needed!?!

Question: Trapped on an island: natural hair advice needed!.?
I know this is in the wrong section but I'm hoping to find a few people sympathetic to may cause here (rather than in "beauty and style"!). Yes I'm steriotyping, sorry :)

In a few weeks I will be heading off to a remote island for 3 months. The facilities are pretty basic: shelter, bed, and a long trek to drinkable water.

I'm not predicting much of a problem with personal hygiene as there is always the sea to rinse myself off in.

While this lack of washing doesn't phase me in the slightest, I will eventually return to civilization, and I have started to wonder what effect going 3 months without shampoo will have on my hair. I've always wanted to wean myself off shampoo but was scared of the greasy stage.

I've haven't used harsh shampoos for years now (just a natural one with a few essential oils), my hair is very, very short (~2cm), and it was rather curly before I chopped it off all those years ago.

I've heard that the best way to get gorgeous natural hair is to rinse only (water) and brush daily. Is the brushing part required/recommended for curly hair.? I used to never brush my hair when it was long because it just turned into one giant frizz!!

also, as I will be washing in the sea, any advice on how the salt water will effect this "naturalizing" experiment.? Should I try to keep my hair out of the water.?.? That possibly means no rinsing as I'm not sure there are streams on the island and drinking water is for drinking only (obviously).

Any advice/comments from people who have experimented with/still have natural unwashed hair.

Cheers!Health Question & Answer

I gotcha on this one. I have similar hair to you but wanted to cut chemicals out of my hair "diet."

"I used to never brush my hair when it was long because it just turned into one giant frizz!!"
Same with me. Adding oil to your hair after you've towel dried it (it'll still be a little wet) does WONDERS. This keeps your hair from getting frizzy because it "seals" the hair. Focus on the ends here, too. The way frizz happens is when your hair begins to absorb the extra moisture in the air around you, and it acts up. The oil will not only moisturize your hair significantly and naturally, but will also seal your hair so it can't absorb extra water. You'll notice your hair is much more brushable, shiny, and soft.

"also, as I will be washing in the sea, any advice on how the salt water will effect this "naturalizing" experiment.?"
Sea water is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G for your hair because of the various sea botanicals, like kelp, that nourish your hair. If I had the option, I would always wash my hair with sea water. This is only applicable in natural, nice areas that are untouched by man's chemicals. Your body may not respond like mine, so just pay attention to your hair. If you don't notice instant improvement, then you should omit the sea water when you can help it.

When you get back, I recommend using a combination of olive oil, dark cocoa powder, and coffee grounds on your hair (make a paste out of it). This will nourish your hair with the antioxidants found in the cocoa and coffee, as well as hydrate and soften thanks to the olive oil. For extra antioxidants, add a can of organic tomato paste to the mix (if you have a white bathtub that doesn't drain well, do not use the tomato because it will stain your bathtub...I speak from experience). Since your hair is dark (at least it is on your avatar), you will appreciate the wonders that cocoa and coffee will do in bringing out natural highlights in your brown hair. My hair went from almost black to having various shades of brown in it.

Hope this helps!Health Question & Answer

Well, all I can say is sea water + hair = bad. The salt gets all in there and it leaves your hair feeling really matted, chunky, and difficult to control. I don't think there's anything bad that can happen to your hair if you don't wash it for 3 months. You just need to wash it when you get home and you'll be fine.Health Question & Answer

Well ....... for starters,
make do with dreadlocks in your hairs.
And even rub a slight layer of coconut oil on them for extra shine.
Ya's won't then hafta worries so much about washin', as dreadlocks prefer the opposite really.
To refresh your scalp, take a sea dip in the waves--submerging the noggin underwater for a few minutes.
Not only is it proven to freshin' up the scalp, but you'll see some sealife as well.--Like tropical fish perhaps w/boobly eyes a starin at your dreadiez.
Then rinse off w/cool fresh water.
VOILA!~ You've now weaned yerself off shampoo!!
...... foreva, foreva, foreva, FOREVA!!!!!!!
