Good grief, no! You cannot live without vitamins! That's what the name means - they're "vital amines".
Of course you know that at times, too much of a good thing can be harmful. Vitamin A, for instance, is essential - but taking massive doses of it can cause serious illness and even death. That's also true of Vitamin D. So - listen to your physician, not the alternative practitioners, and take only the amount he/she recommends.
Vitamin C is very important, and in the past was hard to come by. That's true even today in some of the under-developed areas of the world. But taking huge doses of it, despite the recommendations of people like Linus Pauling, will not prevent colds or other contagious illnesses. If you can get a three-ounce serving of orange juice three times a week, that will give you all the extra vitamin C your body needs.Health Question & Answer
