It is not addictive but it is habit forming, and you can develop an emotional dependence on it. The way I define (drug) addiction is a physical addiction. Psychological addiction is something that can happen for anything, whether it be playing video games, running, working, etc.. It's not intrinsic to the object itself, but is rather formed by the person. Physical addiction is a little different, in that you can have potential complications if you stop use.

So in that aspect, no, it isn't addictive. But it is habit forming, and it sounds like your friend has developed an unhealthy relationship with marijuana (just like some can develop an unhealthy relationship with video games).

She doesn't really need rehab. I have not known one person that has had a serious reaction to quitting pot, and they generally reintegrate back into sober life fairly easily. One thing that may be useful is to realize that eventually there are periods when it is no longer enjoyable, and those are good times to stop buying it. You can generate that sort of effect by smoking a lot in a short period of time.

Since it is psychological, she should contemplate why she can't. The most probabilistic reason is because she has formed a habit around it. She developed a lifestyle where that's what she does. So when she stops using it, she doesn't know what else to do. Therefore, she should replace that habit with another habit. If it is something deeper, such as anxiety or depression, then she should try and investigate that aspect of herself. Marijuana could help her develop some insights into those deeper fears if she approaches her problems mindfully.

Don't worry about your friend. Many marijuana addicts function fine in everyday life (it is rare but some develop very low motivation, or are dumb enough to drive or work while high). She will eventually resolve her addiction on her own. Marijuana has sedative effects which can be psychologically addictive, but it is essentially a psychedelic, and therefore not particularly appealing for addiction because of the variability of its effects.Health Question & Answer

The addiction in smoking pot is more of an addiction to the habit not the actual drug. Marijuana is not habit forming other then the addiction the the habit itself. People like to get high piont blank end of story, she is more then likley addicted to the high not the drug. People that use it for medical reasons ussually eat it in many different forms because when you eat it the high is not there but the pain releieve affects of it are and it works much like perscription pain killers.

People that use it for pain may be addicted to it because of the pain releieveing factors of it.
Just tell her to stop. Again it is not the drug she is addicted to it is the high, Marijuana is all natual and additive propertys of it are more of a mind addtiction. Hope this helpsHealth Question & Answer

To answer quickly and in point form:

- You cannot get Physically addicted to Marijuana which means they cannot become dependant on the drug like cigarettes say as there is not addictive chemical in pot.

- You CAN get psychologically addicted to smoking marijuana just as people get addicted to gambling, sex, alcohol and so forth.

- Rehab may help but really the best way to quit is cold turkey and be informed of the facts of WHY they feel they cannot stop.

- Motivation, goal setting, positive thinking and introspection on the reasons WHY they feel they need to keep smoking be it an escape from something bad in their lives or even just social pressure. The reasons are many but they are the underlying causes not because the drug itself has a hold on them.

- Smoking pot does cause problems in many people but not all, in the end though an addiction to anything can cause more problems than anything else because it drains a person of options, money, motivation and so on so overcomeing an addiction of any sort is vital for health and happiness.Health Question & Answer

Yup. Well, kind of, there's people out there for whom pot is -profoundly- addictive, incredibly so. Not everyone, not even the majority of people, but enough. It's kind of similar to alcohol, in that a good chunk of the population can handle it, and then there's the alcoholics. See a lot of addicts of marijuana these days.

How about Marijuana Anonymous.? 12 step program, get a sponsor, has one of the better success rates out there.Health Question & Answer

People have always said that pot is not addicting but I know it is bull, I have known alot of people who smoke pot and how much they want it when they don't have any says to me that it can be addicting. However if you have to quit it is possible. My husband got into some legal trouble and had to quit smoking to stay out of jail, he did just fine. Then once he started smoking again he acts like he has to have it especially after work. I really don't understand it myself of course I have never smoked it so I wouldn't know.Health Question & Answer

I am going through this right now. It's called emotional dependancy. The drug itself isn't addictive in the least but your friend and I as well have difficulty imagining life without weed. I've been smoking for a few years and had to quit a few times and chose to quit a few more. The best way to do it is how I'm trying to right now and that is to start by not buying anymore, cut that option off. that way she'll be forced to find other ways to enjoy the day. I am focusing on school work and listening to music today and I have diversions planned for the rest of the week as well. It's a daily struggle as I'm sure you know but it comes down to finding better ways to spend her time.Health Question & Answer

just forget for a second that we are talking about pot.

if your friend is doing any kind of drug and feels that she can't stop on her own, she is addicted. period. yes, you can go to rehab for a pot addiction. if she feels it is out of her control to stop, she needs professional help. there is no need for you to try to figure out if it's "bad enough" etc. you can contact your local hospital or rehab center for more help and information. please help her...she sounds like she wants it.Health Question & Answer

Absolute bullshit you can not get addicted to marijuana chemically, though anything in this world has the possibility of mental addiction, IE T.V.

Its just that she doesnt want to quit because weed makes everything better. Food tastes great and being bored is never the same.
