I have always found malt vinegar works best (maybe other sorts of vinegar too). OK, it doesn't taste great but you only need one large sip. I know how horrible it is to get an attack that you just can't get rid of and you get to the stage when you'll try anything.
Another one that works is breathing slowly in and out of a paper bag. But paper bags can be hard to come by these days. Otherwise there is sipping water very slowly or holding your breathe for as long as possible.
