Here's an answer I gave recently on this very topic:
You can stand one of those things in a candlestick holder and let it burn. Cut it up and what do you see.? A lot of brown gooey wax that strangely resembles ear wax. The real stuff in your ear can't be extracted by a candle but your ear can get burnt by melted candle wax.

I heard it's BS, and I really wouldn't advise DIYing as you could end up with damaged ear drums if something goes wrong. No fun I know...you could try murine ear drops if you want to clean them, it's a lot safer and easier to find.Health Question & Answer
