I will comment on some herbs that I know work very well from experience of myself and others.

First though, do not overlook the benefits of meditation. When I had trouble with insomnia and over-anxiety, meditation was my cure. In fact, the other night I needed sleep, so I counted my breaths to 10 and repeated the cycle deepening the breaths of each set increasingly until I fell asleep. Very simple techniques bring profound effects. Please google meditation for insomnia.

For herbs, natural herbs that will calm the nervous system are very effective in calming the nervous system enough to sleep. Some induce a calming state, others a sleepy state.

I have personal experience with both natural and synthetic drugs. I prefer natural herbs for insomnia. I will list these in order of most-effective (for insomnia) to least effective.

Lavender is VERY pleasing and relaxing. It has been sworn on as the answer to insomnia for thousands of years.

I highly recommend Valerian. You can find it (and most, if not all, of the herbs I'll mention in this post) in grocery stores near the organic foods (usually on the same aisle that sells herbal teas, etc.). Side effects are minimal, and in me, none. There is no lag, and no hangover in the morning. Use at least double the dose of the dosage prescribed for anxiety (Nearly all insomnia herbs are anti-anxiety herbs at higher doses).

Chamomile has pleasurable calming effects similar to Lavender.

Hops is a great remedy for nervous anxiety and irritability, and taking enough (again, usually double the prescribed dose of anxiety) will help relax you and induce sleep.

Scullcap/Skullca is great. It also offers a "detachment" effect - our emotional attachments oftentimes are our anxiety roots and inability to sleep. Skullcap helps us let go and just relax into sleep naturally and effectively.

Passion flower is an effective anti-spasmodic that offers a calm "mildly" sedating effect. Mixed in a propriety blend it is effective. I have no experience trying it stand-alone for insomnia.

Kava Kava is one of the most powerful herbal sedatives I've tried. Brings intense calm with no lack in clarity of thought. The liver toxicity warnings are relevant but only at very very high doses. Yogi Teas has a very good mix. It takes a bit to bring on a tired state though, so it takes educated experimentation.

Utilized alone, or in conjunction with other herbs, these herbs are all non-habit-forming, non-toxic, and are safe for most people, including children, but I must remind you to use caution when taking any medicine while on any pharmaceutical.

The rapid heart beat is called Tachycardia when above 100 bpm.

An excellent homeopathic remedy that I have prescribed and recommended for years to slow your heart down is -- Aconitium Napellius---. It is usually used for sudden onset of ailments. It is also good for anxiety and mental restlessness, fear, fright.

Take Aconite Napellus in 30x or 200x potency, 3-4 drops, 3 times a day (3 doses) in ? th glass of water.

Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.

I suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take 2-3 drops of selected remedy in ? th glass of water, preferably empty stomached, 3 doses 8 hourly and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.

If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.
