First of all, the needles are not placed any deeper than the first layer of skin. You will barely feel them unless your qi is stagnant, or there is distress at a point. In that case, it WILL hurt.

Needle size depends on what style of acupuncture your practitioner uses: Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.

My practitioner uses all three, and I have experienced all three.

Korean style uses a much shorter, thicker needle, about as thick as a fine sewing needle. It is VERY intense and moves a lot of qi.

Japanese and Chinese style uses long, fine needles, and move qi more gently.Health Question & Answer

The needles are not thick if that is what you are asking. Depending on which parts of your body the needles are inserted you may not even feel them.

Acupuncture needles are very thin because they are not hollow -- they do not have to carry any liquid inside them like a regular hypodermic needle does. Health Question & Answer
