Side effects of Epsom Salts as laxative?!

Question: Side effects of Epsom Salts as laxative.?
Has anyone used Epsom Salts (magnesium salfate) as a laxative.? Were there any unpleasant side effects.? Does it completely empty the digestive track, or is it just like taking fibre to reduce constipation.?

How long did it take to work, and what was it like (much running to the toilet).?

I've been told that it might be useful to empty my digestive track to reduce gut spasms (I have endometriosis and experience really bad pain when going to the toilet during my period, and pain killers just don't work much anymore).

I don't want to try it if it makes my gut spasms worse.

Thanks!Health Question & Answer

Yes, been there done that. And I mean all of that! I also have endometreosis. Epsom salts is a very bad idea. It is a painful and damaging experience. I took them and got very, very sick. It was so painful by the time I was done. It was horrible. I never get bladder infections, it's a really rare thing for me, and I can always clear them up on my own. A month or two after I used the epsom salts, I got a massive kidney infection. It started out serious I was urinating blood, high fever, it was bad. I ended up in the hospital. I don't think that was a coincidence. I do not recommend it. Now I know what you mean with pain and the toilet. I take a product from a company called Lepti~Trim it is their bowel cleanse. My mom gave it to me, she was using it for weight loss. I just wanted the pain to stop. This product is mostly full of B vitamin which helps the colon absorb more nutrients. It was not ruff on my stomach, and I did not need to make more trips to the bathroom. It just reduces the pain. I'm not saying this will work for you and I am definitely not trying to sell you on a product. I'm just telling you what works for me. Another thing that will help is getting abdominal massage from a massage therapist. It hurts really bad the first time, but the pain will lessen every time you get one. I added a link so you can see the product I'm talking about. I don't know if that's the best price though. Good luck and best wishes I feel your pain!

I would not recommend Epsom Salt as a laxative. If you want to use magnesium, buy Natural Calm (magnesium citrate) instead. However, it typically doesn't cause abdominal pain, just loose stool.

You might try hot castor oil packs over the abdomen to relieve both the endometriosis and the occasional constipation. (See first link below.)

Hot Ginger tea will do you a world of good - good for endometriosis, good for PMS, good for pain. Sweeten it with honey if you like and add a slice of lemon for variety. Drink it hot right after breakfast & can help the bowels move, too.Health Question & Answer
