Does anyone Believe in the benefits of mega-dosing with Vitamin C?!

Question: Does anyone Believe in the benefits of mega-dosing with Vitamin C.?
Answers:
Balance and quality of nutrient is the key. Your body is all about balance. Taking ascorbic acid (the make believe vitamin C) can damage your body greatly in large quantity and damage your body less if you take less. Ascorbic Acid is NOT vitamin C, even though it is listed as such. It is only one part of a complex that makes up the vitamin C found in nature. Ascorbic acid will NOT even cure scurvy.

It does deplete your body of calcium and damages your DNA. If you take ascorbic acid and then consume a coca cola or any soda, for that matter, the cola contains benzoate of soda as a preservative. This combination of chemicals creates pure BENZENE in your liver and damages your liver greatly. Benzene is a very toxic substance that is used as a base for making things like tolulene, and all kinds of petroleum type products.

Taking natural vitamin C with all the components of the complex found in nature will not harm you the way ascorbic acid does. Nature is very smart as is the body. If you eat foods that are grown on very fertile soils, not the chemically fertilized soils like in America, the vitamin C content of the food is usually high. The oranges you buy in the mausoleums where dead food is held in state (super markets that are not "super" at all), you will find they have NONE to little vitamin C in them. We have lost over 50% of the antioxidants in our food supply in the last 25 years.

Taking vitamin C in the quantities that you would get by eating high quality foods that contain C, is the best way to judge how much you should take. If you can find a good quality food that has been grown in good fertile soil with no insecticides, etc. you will find it is loaded with the good nutrients and made up of the complete complex that will actually nourish your body and not deplete it of the "co-factors" the way ascorbic acid robs your body.

You don't need mega doses. Two kiwi-fruit a day supplies the needed amount. Depending on how healthy your body is, it might even be a problem.

You can't take ascorbic acid and expect anything. Wanting to take vitamin C and taking ascorbic acid is like wanting and egg and getting the shell. It is just a part of the vitamin C complex. All nutrients come as complexes and with cofactors necessary for you body to use it. If you megadose on a isolate of vitamin C you will probably not do yourself any good.

If your body is unhealthy and the cells don't have enough of the master antioxidant glutathionie within it, the C will grab onto toxins and circle around within the body with no place to turn these toxins over to. That could become toxic.

You need to get a basic amount of vitamin C daily but it needs to come from a whole food vitamin with all the co-factors needed. The body will recognize this and use it.

There are many brands of whole food supplements available. Health Question & Answer

There is no point in mega-dosing, since your body can only handle a certain amount (not sure exactly how much, but it is just above the Recommended Daily Dosage), before it can't process any more. What's left of the 'mega-dose' after your body's used what it can will simply be passed through your body and excreted down the toilet. You will literally be throwing your money down the drain. Stick to the RDA allowances - they've been carefully (and scientifically) studied and configured for the human body. By doing this, you'll save a lot of money in the long run.

also WORTH NOTING IS THE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS:
Side effects of megadose vitamin C include diarrhea, renal stones, iron overload, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Vitamin C and Cancer remains on the shelves of bookstores throughout the country. There are ardent supporters of megadose vitamin C despite the strong scientific evidence refuting its use in the treatment of cancer. (QUOTED FROM THE SOURCE, as below).Health Question & Answer

Most of the mega dose vitamin C "cures" work on the Placebo affect. Double blind studies have shown that the effects of mega-dose vitamin c are there, but very moderate.

Things that Vitamin C does do:
Slightly reduce the length and severity of cold symptoms (usually by about 3-5%).
Prevent Scurvy
Cure Scurvy
Slightly reduce infection rates (about 3%).

That's all I can remember off the top of my head. I'd have to pull our all my journal articles for more specifics. I also remeber that these values are similar to those for people who take a standard dose of Vitamin C (equivalent to a glass of Orange juice twice a day).

However, long term mega-dose vitamin C usage has severe medical consequences.Health Question & Answer

as a medical professional, I find it difficult to believe in any benefit of mega-dosing with vitamin C. The body uses about 500 mg a day, any excess is filtered out by the kidneys and excreted. The body doesn't make use of it, it simply makes the kidneys work harder to get rid of it.Health Question & Answer

It's mostly a placebo effect. People believe that taking high dosage of Vitamin C will work for them, so they believe that it does. In all reality, Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin. So when you reach the amount that you're body takes, the rest is rid through the body through urination, sweating...etc.Health Question & Answer

using it for what.? vitamin C is good for you but in large doses it stops being of benefit and becomes a problem. long term usage of high doses of vitamin C isn't effective and eats up your calcium supply so you have to take a calcium supplment too.
taking airborne short term won't hurt you tho and can help you re build your immune system.Health Question & Answer

Many people swear by it, and I'm sure it has benefits; but I have read that once you stop - if you stop by just forgetting or just stop period - that you can get very ill as your body has become reliant on the C. It is called something like "reverse scurvy" (scurvy being a deficiency in C)Health Question & Answer

No, vitamin C is a water soluable vitamin. Which means anything that your body can't use right away you pee out! So, I take Vitamin C multiple times a day so that it is absorbed, especially during cold and flu season!Health Question & Answer
