Answers:
There are many risk factors associated with owning your own business. The largest and most scariest risk factor is that you MIGHT FAIL. Ask yourself if you can handle that kind of self-defeating attitude.

That being said, there are many health risks associated with any job from carpal tunnel syndrome to arthritis to lung disease - it just depends upon the job.

If you really, truly want to be a massage therapist, then why worry about supposed "risk factors".? Follow your dream and see where it takes you.

I didn't always want to be a massage therapist. But at 40 years of age, I realized that this is something I had been offering friends and family for years, free of charge! So, back to school I went. I know own my own business, having worked for salons for about a 1 1/2 years. I much prefer owning my own business as I have more freedom to advertise and offer bonuses and discounts to my clients that I didn't have in a salon. I also still work part-time at a different retail until my business is self-supporting. I'm getting there, ya know. A few months ago, my boyfriend kicked me and my girls out of the house and I really did have to rely on my own business to help make ends meet. And now I have even more incentive to make my business grow.

Ask yourself what your dream is: do you really want to work on people that are frustrated with their lives and family members.? (they will unload on you). What about the very ill, cancer surviors or those with heart conditions.? Yep, I've got those too. What about the lonely single people that just need a compassionate, kind word and touch.? And don't forget those ...ummmmm, yeah, those people that will ask for just a bit more. How will you handle that.? Just follow your dream. It may not be massage therapy. It may be that massage therapy will lead you into something else. keep your heart and your mind open. Health Question & Answer

?The prerequisites I tell all prospective massage students is the following:

First, "You gotta have the want to". Meaning that you have to have the inner drive to want to help people. If you are going into it just to make money, look into other types of training, because you will burnout right away, because being an MT isn't your average 9-5 job.

Secondly, prepare to be a "professional student", because you will need to know almost as much as doctor does about the human body. When a client of yours asks to work on a certain muscle or
asks you why a certain muscle hurts, if you don't know what you are talking about, you will at the least sound uninformed and at the worst, you will lose that client and will probably never get any others, because "people talk". Think about it, when you want to get recommendations, who do you talk to.?

So, you can't fake it when you are working on or with the human body. Besides, there is too much mediocrity out there all ready.

Besides Anatomy & Physiology, you will also have to master massage theory, techniques, history, contraindications, physical assessment, as well as Business Law, Record Keeping, Ethics and Traditional Oriental Medicine concepts.

Then be tested upon all of the above not only by the school you are attending, but also by a State and in some states a National massage board.

If you are ready, willing and able to complete all of the above, then have at it !! Health Question & Answer

If you practice good body techniques and become aware of your own body, then there aren't any health risks.
There are still places like wellness spas that pay well but you have to search for them. Your best option is to start working somewhere and gain experience. Once you have become knowledgeable, start focusing on starting your own practice. It takes determination and passion though. Be patient, don't give up and it will pay off.Health Question & Answer

Heck everything is risky these days. Try getting a job at wall street or for a car manufacturer or WAMu bank.

Try sitting at a desk all day in front of a computer and not get carpal tunnel, neck problems, thoracic outlet problems or back problems.

Nothing is easy or free of challenges

Work is where we project all of our unmet needs. Stop looking for work and find a calling - something you are really drawn to and love. The money will come easily when you find it.
