Leaky Gut Syndrome??!

Question: Leaky Gut Syndrome.?.?
Hey guys..

I'm 16 and I'm assuming I have leaky gut syndrome.
Is there any way to find out FOR SURE if I have leaky gut.? (i hope it's cheap....)

If you guys want to diagnose me.. go ahead. haha.. Doctors have never helped me so...

-I have constipation (i have 1-2 bowel movements a WEEK)
-I'm losing my eyebrows
-I've taken acne medication and duretics(spelling.?) for years which is I think part of the problem..
-I have seborrheic dermatitis
-I suffer from dandruff and acne
-I used to eat a whole bunch of processed foods (ice-cream, bunch of fast foods...etc). But I changed my diet a bit 1 month ago.

I don't know what's wrong with me...
At first, I thought I had candida, but I don't even know.

THANK YOU for your time.Health Question & Answer

Hi Yuri. There is a standard diagnostic test for intestinal hyperpermeability (leaky gut) called "the intestinal permeability test" (pretty simple!).

The test is performed by drinking a solution containing two sugars: lactulose and mannitol. Lactulose is poorly absorbed by a healthy gut and excessively absorbed by a 'leaky gut'. Mannitol is readily absorbed by a healthy gut. The levels of these sugars are then measured in the urine. A higher than normal level of lactulose in the urine indicates a leaky gut and a lower than normal urine level of mannitol indicates malabsorption by the gut.

Any health care professional trained in nutritional therapies should be familiar with this test and can order it for you.

Your total picture of signs and symptoms suggests the possibility of Celiac Disease. I suggest you get tested for it. Celiac Disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease that damages the lining of the small intestine (and causes the "odd" combination of leaky gut and malabsorption). It is caused by an allergic reaction to the proteins in wheat, rye and barley called glutens/gliadins.

Celiac Disease is quite common, but is rarely diagnosed by medical doctors (probably because it is a nutritional disorder - no drugs treat it). Most doctors don't even know that constipation can be caused by CD! The only treatment is total avoidance of glutens/gliadins in your diet (NO MORE JUNK FOOD - but you will feel GREAT!).

You really need to find a health care professional trained in nutrition and environmental medicine. Naturopathic Physicians, Chiropractors, Certified Clinical Nutritionists (CCNs) and that rare medical doctor trained in "functional medicine" or "environmental medicine" would be a good choice for you.

Best wishes and good luck.Health Question & Answer

You know, it may be Gluten Intolerance, or Sylliac Disease. This is an allergy to wheat. Eating wheat and other gluten products pretty much cause an autoimmune attack on your small intestine.

You try getting tested for gluten sensitivity or trying staying off all wheat (and all gluten) and see if you feel better.
