Is there a natural antidepressant that really works? ?!

Does anyone know this please or have had any good experiences , knowledge, ect.?

Answers:
Well most drugs are made from natural substances (plants, herbs ect) anyway. If you mean natural as in 'not a drug', then i don't think there are cures for depressive disorders.

The non-drug mood maintainers (sleep, idealisitic diet, water, exercise, laughing) only help people with a healthy mental balance. If you've got a disorder, where the chemicals in your brain are unbalanced, then i think you need the aid of drugs to keep your mood constant.

It depends a lot on how severe the depression is. I suffer from major depression and have to rely on prescription meds. Still, my best self-treatments are daily exercise and relaxation techniques.

St. John's wort is recommended for mild to moderate depression. You might try 5-HTP or tryptophan. There are also some amino acids like tyrosine and phenylalanine that are supposed to be good for depression. In a good vitamin or health food store, you can ask the clerk for the section on "mood enhancement" or "brain boosters."

Unfortunately, what works for one person may not help another. I had a girlfriend who raved about Chinese herbs for depression, but they did not work for me. So you might have to look around for nutritionists, acupuncturists, etc. until you find something that works well for you.

I would avoid SAM-e. I have talked to many people who tried it, and it did not work. Plus it is very expensive.

A blue green algae called Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA) is a very nutritious plant that has been shown in some cases of an elevation of mood because of a compound called phenylethylamine (PEA). PEA is well known to alleviate depression and elevate mood.

My wife has been known to have serious bouts of depression and has been taking a product called StemEnhance (100% AFA) and her mood swings have greatly improved.

First and foremost Omega 3's. As women we need this fat!! It promotes weight loss in obese people too! When I run out of Fish oils (O3's) I am very suicidal!.?c=1&kw=omega%203's" rel="nofollow">http://www.iherb.com/Search.aspx.?c=1&kw=...

5HTP for dopamine/serotonin levels. Natrol works well. 100mg or 200mg a day. At 300mg a day I get very happy and find that too weird! :) Start with 50mg caps if you wish.

Phosphatidyl Choline enhances the effects of Omega 3's in the sense that it takes anxiety attacks away. (If you ONLY have depression but no anxiety then you do not need this, but when I bought this for weight loss I found it to be a kick @ss mood lifter!) :)

Mmmm, The Sun Yes, for Vitamin D. It can work on mild depression, like the winter blues. But do not go tanning. All you need is 20 min a day of sun exposure. Try an afternoon or morning walk. The fresh air and light activity can also help release endouphins aka feel good meds.Health Question & Answer
