Melatonin- does anyone know if it should be taken consistently?!

Question: Melatonin- does anyone know if it should be taken consistently.?
I've been taking Melatonin every once in a while, because I'm finding that I have a difficult time feeling sleepy, of late.

I'm wondering if since it's a natural substance found in the brain, maybe I should take it consistently, so that my levels are not fluctuating too much.?

Is that a good idea, or doesn't it matter.?
Thanks so much for your answers :)Health Question & Answer

Persistent use of melatonin usually causes a condition called " tachyphyllaxis". This means the longer you use it the less it works. Melatonin is best for people who travel now and then. It is not considered therapy for primary insomnia. That is, insomnia without an obvious cause.

If you have amusement items in your bedroom other than what is used for sex, like TV's, stereo's, computers, etc., I suggest you remove them from your bedroom. They give your brain the wrong message for the activity the bedroom is meant for. Make sure the room is dark, quiet and cooler rather than warmer. Do not have alarm clocks with bright lights or faces either.
Design and use your bedroom for only sleeping, sex and dressing, not amusement.

From an herbal standpoint the following combinations work well for people who have constant insomnia (primary insomnia).
Passion Flower extract---300mg
Calcium-------------------------250mg
Valerian root-----------160--200mg
chamonile extract------------50mg
These are often found together in the same pill or powders. Be careful from who you buy most herbs, many are simply scams.
Hope this has helped.Health Question & Answer

Taking the Melatonin should be an exception for you not a regular treatment. Your body does in fact produce enough on it's own, but you may be letting stress, electronics, boredom, etc. get in the way of getting a good nights sleep. Try to create and maintain a bedtime ritual for yourself and you body will sense the cues and relax, letting you fall asleep faster.Health Question & Answer

Taking 5 mg of Melatonin 3 to 4 hours before you go to bed over a 4-week period should help regulate your sleep/wake cycles.
If you plan on taking it for longer than that, you may want to talk to your doctor...

The single dose is still effective, though, if you just have trouble falling asleep every once in awhile after that. :)

Good luck :)Health Question & Answer
