Can using an inhaler become addicting?!

Question: Can using an inhaler become addicting.?
The last time I went to the allergy doctor, my allergies were so bad. She gave me an inhaler and said VERY CLEARLY...
"Only use this as A RESCUE...if you feel you can (get back to normal) without one...then don't use it at all. Only use it as a rescue"

Then she said, "if you start to use this inhaler more than a certain amount of times a day...you need to see me immediately"...

So...are inhalers addicting or something....?

By the way, I'm not asking so I can get high...I wouldn't do that. In fact, I'm scared to use my inhaler at all. She said that my lungs, the tips of them don't open normally and I might have a "touch of ashma".Health Question & Answer

Answers:
No, asthma inhalers are not addictive. However you should only use them as needed as they do have side-effects. Note this only applies to the "reliever" meds (what you have described as "rescue"). Some people need to take medication every day for their asthma ("preventers"). Your asthma is clearly not bad enough for you to require these medications.

Your doctor told you to seek medical help immediately if you were using it more that x times per day because this is an indication that your asthma is poorly controlled and you may need stronger medication.Health Question & Answer

I've had one for 18 yrs now. They are RESCUE inhalers just to give an immediate help. If you need it more than occasionaly that just means you may benefit from other types of medicine, thats all.

If your using it constantly you need other assistance like Advair. No worries and good luck!Health Question & Answer

It probably can because for my son the pharmacist said it can cause you to become jittery. Some people like to feel this way. Good luck with the allergies.Health Question & Answer

not physically addictive but some people start to use the inhalers even when they don't need it, just out of habit, and it can become psychologically addictive. THAT is when it becomes a problem because some inhalers can come with dangerous side effects, so if you use your inhaler when you don't need it you are subjecting yourself to those side effects.

But to answer your question. NO it is not physically addictive, BUT don't make it a habit of using it just whenever. Like your doctor said, just use it when you have to, because after any kind of medication/drug isn't that good for you anyway.Health Question & Answer
