They are one and the same.

There is a chemical in the castor oil that is toxic to the cells in your intestines - so if you take it internally your intestines in response says "whoa - get that outta here" and voila, you have a laxative effect.

Some people apply it to the abdomen (they soak a flannel cloth in it, drape it on the abdomen and then cover it with plastic for a while - to be honest, I have no idea why it would work this way, but it is used for the same effect.

For dry chapped skin however, it will be fine....I use it on chapped hands. If you are prone to acne though, I would be careful. It can cause breakouts.Health Question & Answer

Hi Timber

It used to be used on the labour wards in UK hospitals going back some decades....whereby for a woman going into labour they would her them castor oil and orange juice....yuk! You can still use it as a laxative if you want a good clear out once in a while. Not sure if I would recommend it though as I have never tried it so cannot vouch for its efficacy.

Here is a link of some of the benefits of using castor oil on the skin:

If you are going to use castor oil in any way, including on the skin, then it is better to have a premium organic grade, such as this:

I would not use it as a laxative unless recommended to do so by a doctor with naturopath training.

Best wishes.Health Question & Answer
