The problem with heroin is that it becomes an all consuming need. The desire for the high becomes all you can think about. It is such a wonderful, perfect feeling that you wonder how you could EVER live without it. At which point you will do anything to get it. As your tolerance builds you become more likely to push that much more heroin into you to keep the high, rather than just maintaining and staving off withdrawals (which are so horrifying that it defies explanation: think the worst sick you have ever been, like influenza sick, not cold and sniffles sick, and add on constant anxiety attacks and near suicidal depressive mood swings, vomiting, diarrhea). You keep needing to use a bit more and stop thinking rationally. You justify EVERY action that leads to you getting high. These types of justifciations can cause you to shoot just a bit more than you should have and trigger a nice respiratory failure.

To say nothing of the fact that since it is illegal, it is hard to get, expensive to keep buying, and being in withdrawals while hunting for a fix is nothing anyone should ever have to experience.

Now, as to physiological damage from the drug. It's actually pretty safe. Other than the respiratory depression that can result and potentially kill you (i.e. overdosing), there is no liver toxicity (unlike alcohol), no carcinogenic properties (unlike cigarettes), and no brain damage (unlike alcohol). It's actually rather safe as far as drugs go.

The addictive properties are what make it so horrific. Now, compare that to alcohol, which is also highly addictive, and heroin looks like tylenol. Heroin withdrawal makes you THINK you're going to die, but it only kills those who are really sick to begin with (like really weak hearts, for instance, that can't handle extra stress). Alcohol withdrawal can kill you. In order to weather the DTs you have to be in a hospital.Health Question & Answer

Heroin is an opiate, which means it is both very addictive and a very effective pain reliever. (In fact, heroin is closely related to morphine, a drug administered in hospitals world-wide as a powerful pain killer. Both Heroin and Morphine are produced by refining opium poppy seeds).

Heroin is a popular recreational drug because of the high in causes, who's symptoms include drowsiness, euphoria, high levels of relaxation. Unwanted symptoms include nausea and vomiting, disorientation, itching and rashes on the skin, confusion, constipation and urinary retention. (you can't go pee, even if you want to) An overdose of Heroin can cause fatal respiratory depression, meaning that you will stop breathing, causing death.

The main reason Heroin is illegal in most 1st world countries, however, is it's highly addictive quality. You quickly form a physical and psychological dependency on the drug. Withdrawal usually sets 6 to 8 hours after discontinuation of the drug. Symptoms may include: sweating, malaise, anxiety, depression, priapism, extra sensitivity of the genitals in females, general feeling of heaviness, cramp-like pains in the limbs, excessive yawning or sneezing, tears, rhinorrhea, sleep difficulties (insomnia), cold sweats, chills, severe muscle and bone aches; nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, and fever. Many users also complain of a painful condition, the so-called "itchy blood", which often results in compulsive scratching that causes bruises and sometimes ruptures the skin, leaving scabs.

RECAP: heroin may be beneficial medically and a fun recreational drug. Despite this, it is probably not very wise to use heroin, as it's undesirable symptoms are many, and withdrawal is very difficult.Health Question & Answer

Heroin is the "DEVIL" of all drugs. You never know what the drug is going to be laced with and it is HIGHLY addictive. My boyfriend is a recovering addict and in the 3 years that he was hooked I've seen him overdose 5 times. It can send you into respiratory arrest and/or cardiac arrest. If you use needles it will eventually cause your veins to collapse. "Missing" can cause abscesses that can become infected. Not only does it ruin your body and mind it also ruins relationships. My man is very lucky to have had me by his side. I don't know many people that will stick around like I have and not be a drug user also.Health Question & Answer

Heroin abuse is associated with serious health conditions, including fatal overdose, spontaneous abortion, and
