I notice that some lotions and creams will have a label stating "Contains no parabens or propylenglycol"
Are they bad.? What are they exactly and what does it do to the body when applied to the skin.

Here is the best site I've found for this kind of information. It will take you a minute to figure out how to navigate it but once you do it will give you tons of information. The way I decide this stuff is just to choose my battles. For instance I found toothpaste, soap, body lotion, and face care that are all natural and contain no ingredients that worry me but as far as haircare I still go with a well known salon available brand.
