If ephedra is illegal to buy, how can some sites still be selling ma huang?!

Question: If ephedra is illegal to buy, how can some sites still be selling ma huang.?
Reputable herbal sites are selling powdered ma huang with the ephedra alkaloids, is this illegal to buy.? If so how can they be selling it w/o getting in trouble.? Thanks.Health Question & Answer

As long as they don't claim it's Ephedra (or a replacement for it) or don't claim that it'll give the same benefits as Ephedra, it's perfectly legal. The same thing applies to Red Yeast Rice that has naturally occuring Statins in it... you don't need a prescription for it like you would need for a Statin drug.
Supplements can be sold on the market if they have an active ingredient that can be used as a drug as long as they don't claim that it would be a replacement for the drug or list the quantity of that drug in it. Some call it a loophole with the FDA, but they can restrict drugs by the ingredient name, not things that naturally have the drug in it (because it's not that purified compound). I hope I helped!Health Question & Answer

That's a loaded question...

Many people use ephedra as a short-cut to lose weight, either alone or in combination other stimulants/other meds. While it will speed the metabolism, it also does a HOST of other things to the body, many of which are extremely dangerous.

In Canada the ban on Ma huang has been lifted so that the herb can be properly applied (either in Traditional Chinese Medicine or by a qualified practitioner who knows how/when to use it.)

Last issue - what makes a "reputable" online site.? Well... that's pertty hard to define. You can buy all sorts of illegal things online! Just because it's available for purchase doesnt mean that it's necessarily legal to import or possess.Health Question & Answer

Ma Huang is the herbal alkaloid of ephedra and doesn't have the same affect as the pharmaceutical grade synthetic ephedra which has claimed lives.

Mua Huang has not killed anyone to date and is used as part of herbal treatments as an alternative to asthma inhalers with great success. My daughter being one of them at age 6 and has been asthma free for over 7 years now at age 13 from Chinese medicine.

As far as using stimulants of any kind for appetite suppressants, it is not a good thing, because it causes adrenal gland exhaustion and the symptoms of adrenal exhaustion is weight gain and fatigue.

Ma Huang certainly serves its purpose and needs further publication for its uses and practicality in journals considered for the pharmaceutical world, but it has been highly resisted, because there is no funding nor money in safer and cheaper treatment.

As far as being sold, it is unregulated and can interfere with medications as it is an herb that can elicit a reaction. It may not be as strong as medical ephedra (speed) in cough and cold remedies, but it is enough to probably harm someone when mixed with a prescribed drug or someone with a pre existing health condition.

A great resource is the web site below, you click on reference library and find the herb or drug in question to find out known side affects and or deficiencies they may cause.Health Question & Answer

Herbal sites sell Ephedra viridis, which doesn't contain ephedrine (ephedra sinica does), or they sell powdered ma huang with the ephedrine removed. As long as this stuff doesn't contain ephedrine it's legal to sell. Of course, if it doesn't contain ephedrine it doesn't help you lose weight.Health Question & Answer
