Dear Kayla,

A cold sure is a nasty thing - sorry you've got one. If you have lemons and honey on hand, you can add them to tea or even just hot water for some immediate relief. A warm bath might feel nice, with some cold washcloths on your face alternating with the warm. Mentholatum feels good in the stuffy nostrils and on the chafed part of your nose. You might put bengay or mentholatum on your chest. Somewhere I heard that Vicks on the bottoms of your feet takes away a cough. Gargle with salt water to relieve sore throat, and put an thin, wrung-out single layer of cloth around your neck, covered with a wool sock pinned in place overnight. Plenty of rest almost goes without saying. A good diet will include lots of water and juices; citrus fruits have lots of vitamin C, which helps you get well. Chicken soup really does help too. Calcium will help you use the vitamin C, but milk products will produce more mucous, so maybe eat greens instead. Of course there are cold medications you can get in the drug store. Those can help dry things up a bit. Some of the supplements that we prefer are beta glucan, olive leaf, echinacea/goldenseal, and black elderberry.

Some say that a cold lasts ten days if your treat it and ten days if you don't. However, one person at least found that her cold was gone in a day. She writes a newsletter about alternative health, listed below.Health Question & Answer
