I had staples in my ankle surgery on both sides.

They DO bend in slightly in order to stay in and keep the wound closed so that the tissue can knit together. But not like regular staples.

For joint surgery, staples are better than regular sutures because they remain more comfortable as the sutured tissue swells after surgery. Regular tied sutures can cut into swelling skin which increases scarring and is horribly uncomfortable.

The staple puller crimps the staple in the middle to spread the staple open slightly, straightening the prongs so it can come out.

The removal of the staples might be slightly uncomfortable. But it's nothing to be concerned about.Health Question & Answer
